I'll be buying either a Tracker, Triton or Crestliner 15' mod v boat soon. Wa wondering if I should put a 25hp or 15hp on it. I'll be taking the motor off a lot. And I fish the American River and Delta, along with some small lakes. What do you guys think would be best. There is a big cost difference in the two.

I have always said get as big a motor as you can afford, but the weight is also something you are going to need to consider if you will be removing it often

Maybe a 20hp?? I know Johnson(Evinrude) makes one.

I hear allot of talk about how the weight of the engine does not change between certain size motors because they have the same block. I would go with the biggest you can before the weight gets too high, especially if you want to take it off and on often.

I got my "new boat" used from Ryan Thoni on this site aka ChabotPro a 86 stratos w/ a blown motor for 500 bucks and got the motor rebuilt and bored out to a 180 now I can fly down the river going 80mph that is the best deal I have ever got. Thanks again dude :+

I can't remember what Urban has on his boat but I think its a 25 and you can put it on/ take it off pretty darn easily. Go big man, if nothing else you can rig a means to get it on and off because when you get out on the river you're always going to wish you had a little more power.

Ive got a 25, and the boat size you mention is about like mine. Definitely go with the 25, then you can reasonably fish places like the Delta or Clear Lake, or whereever really. You will not be able to do that with a 15. I built a cheap motor stand that sits behind my boat in the garage. It takes me 5 minutes to get it on and off. Its not that heaavy.

However, is you get a 25 four stroke than you may start getting into too much weight.

yeah, I'm looking at the 4-strokes. I'm thinking about a Honda 20hp, same weight as a 15. I'm still deciding which boat to get, really like the G3's, but don't know what they cost.

I just bought a 20HP Honda 4 stroke in November and am quite happy with it. It is one of the only 20HP that is built on the 15 HP block, making it almost the same weight. Most other manufactures go up quite a bit in weight when you get above 15HP.
