I hate losing good swimbaits and lures,can someone let me in on a good lure retriever? i've heard it all from jumping in,to using a spark plug .i saw a pro once use a dog walker rope and a spark plug,but theres gotta be something better out there?

Bass Pro Shops has a few versions. I carry two in my boat. One is a telescopic pole that extends to 18 feet and has a cork screw on the end. While fishing with Rob, he turned me onto the other one that I carry. It is a typical lure retriever with a rope and chains hanging off of the lead part that take it down. The one that extends is about $25 but storage is hard. The other is about $7.

works great. I'd use 50 feet of rope on it instead of 30 though.

I have the BPS model, its a yellow cyclindrical shape with chains on it. Ive used this one for 20 years and never go fishing without it. It pays for itself on the first trip.

One time I did forget it and got my brand new high dollar swimbait hung. I ended up taking one of my buoys, cutting the weight off, then tying my fishing line to the buoy. I was the first one at the lake the next day, lure retriever in hand, and went and got my bait back.

I use the BPS retriever. I put longer chains on it with a slightly larger link. I have one good tip. Every time I went to use it the rope was always tangled. Now I have it on a marker buoy and it serves two purposes, lure retriever and weight for a buoy.

To prevent tangles in the provided line, I took a gatorade bottle and shoved all the line inside the bottle right up to the retriever weight, then screwed the lid on. You can do this cause the provided rope is very thin. Then, when I get hung, I just grab the bottle, open the lid, and play out line. Once done, just put the line back into the bottle. Takes a little time, but its worth it.

Ive fished with people who offer a bait retriever, and they give it to you and its a tangled mess. And as many of you know when its windy a hung lure and dealing with a lure retriever can be a nightmare. No time for tangles. Keep your retriever tangle free and avoid serious headache.
