i just picked up some nice glasses today.

I got the costa del mar fathom polarized glasses in the green mirror lens. these lenses are sweet and are made out of glass instead of polycarbonate and are still very light.


I've done some research, but was wondering what light conditions green lenses are made for.
I'm color blind so I cant really tell if the lens is actually green or if that is just the mirror color. (the lens part might be amber????)

any help would be great, i just want some background on these things

ps: is there any way to test weather my new 150$ glasses are better in terms of seeing fish than my old woo daves model-20$, or is that only testable on the water?

A real life test is about the only way you're going to be able to compare lenses effectively. Everyone's eyes are different and what might be a great color or style for you, may not be as good for someone else.

There are not too many companies that manufacture a green lens, but typically you see green lenses described as being for all around use, and typically a green lens is a darker lens so it cuts out a lot of light. The solar bat moss green lenses for example are good during the middle of the day in direct sunlight. In the morning and evening, they cut out so much light that they are less effective during those times.

The other thing to consider is contrast. Contrast is really important when sight fishing because in the ideal situation, you should only barely be able to see the bass while you fish for it. When you're looking up through the glare to see the fish, it will often appear as just a dark outline. Being able to contrast the outline of the fish vs. what is behind it is really important.

I don't know why scientifically, but green lenses seem to offer good contrast when looking at green lake bottom or green weeds. In the ocean though, the green lenses to me make everything look kind of weird to me. I think it has to do with the ocean being more of a blue color overall. This year I wore the Kaenon y-35 yellow lens a lot because I fished before and after work and needed to let as much light in as possible to see better during those low light times of day. I was totally impressed with the level of contrast with these lenses! On the other hand, wearing a yellow lens during the middle of a sunny day really wears out your eyes because everything is so bright...

So as you can see, there are tradeoffs in this stuff, and I really don't think there is one perfect lens for all conditions. Talk to pro fishermen, especially guys who sight fish, and you'll find that they carry several pairs of sunglasses with them at all times for different conditions. It seems like overkill when you aren't tuned in to the subtle differences in the lenses, but it makes a lot of sense once you become aware of the differences that different shades/colors of lenses make.

yeah, yesterday i went fishing and saw a lot of fish roaming around, but i forgot my cheap pair to compare them to the new ones

I just know that i love the mirror finish and the lifetime warranty

i also was given a "testing" pair of costa del mars......they let me take my dad's keys and try to scratch the glass lens......nothing!!

thats the main reason why I bought them

My fishing is done anywhere from 4 am to 11 pm.....i guess they dont make a lens for that!:-)

i just need to experiment with my colorblindness the find the right lens that brings out the fish

I've pretty much given up on finding the perfect lens color for me. The reason that I feel this way is for just the reason you stated. I'm color blind. I've known I was colorblind since they tested me when I was around six. I thought grass was red!

I've used a few different lens colors and they seem about the same to me. I have Solar Bats with the mossback lens and I couldn't figure out what the rave about them was. They cut glare and do help, but i'm never going to distinguish between all those shades of green as good as someone with normal color vision. I can stare down into the water and take them on and off without seeing too much better than the naked eye. I currently have Kaenons with a grey lens and it's the same deal. They protect my eyes and that's about it.

thats a dissapointment.....hmm someone sould figure out a cure for colorblindness...it sucks!!!!

Sorry to dissapoint you. There are several different kinds of color blindness and some people are more severe than others. I'm pretty bad :( If you can see better with your new glasses, then they're definitely helping. Different color lenses might actually help what you can see. I just haven't found a lens that works wonders for me.

They do make a pair of glasses (doctor prescribed I believe) that are tinted and supposedly help clor blind people see color better. I don't know how well they work, but it would be cool to get some and see the world like everyone else :)

I read once a long time back that Aaron Martens was color blind. Aaron is also known as a phenomenal sight fishermen. Maybe one of you guys could send him an email off his website and ask what kind of glasses he uses. Something tells me a guy like him as investigated what the best sunglasses are extensively and he may have some good avice

I was looking at those pages yesterday. the one page that is supposed to show "normal" people what colorbild people see is not true.....my mom (not colorblind) said all the pictures were the exzact same.
