2936, Quick rod question.
Posted by Toadster, Mon Jul-17-06 12:45 PM
Hello all,

I've been shopping for two rods to buy my partner. He has a few spare reels and I'd like to see him pair them with something and have them on hand so I don't have to suffer through the constant re-rigging of his Carolina and drop shot rods. Mainly a dedicated flippin stick and something to throw soft jerk baits. I have almost settled on the Fenwick HMX rods but I came across the Okuma Guide series rods and they look good for the money. Can anyone chime in about what they think of these? I was on a trip in AZ and my guide commented about having a buddy who is sponsored by Okuma because I use an Induron on my swim bait rod. He mentioned said friend "likes their new sticks" but that's all I've ever heard about them.

Thanks in advance for the help.

J

I will tell you 1st hand the Okuma Guide Select Flipping stick is sweet. I have beat the hell out of mine and its still top notch. Lightweight, sensitive and tons of power to pull the big dawgs out of the stuff. As far as soft jerkbait rods I use the Castaway STH7 and it does a good job for me and also doubles for many other baits.

I am on the Okuma Pro staff, but I would use this flipping stick even if I wasnt.

Thanks! I’m not a fan of the guides on the HMX series rods and I was looking for an excuse to go with the Okuma. ;-) Now if I could only find the freakin thing someplace. Anyone know of a shop in LA or Orange County that has them?

Thanks again,

J

Thanks for your reply. Have you played around with the 7 footer? I don't usally care for telescoping rods, to bad there is not a place arond here that carries the full line of their rods so that I could handle them both.

I have the Okuma Guide select 7ft Med Hvy swimbait rod. I think it would make an awsome flipping stick and its one piece. I use it my little swimbaits and for calicos but I have always thought it would make a great flipping stick. I also have a couple guide select spinning rods and I couldnt be hapier with them. Every body I have shown cant beleiv they only cost $100

I never felt one but just went with Matt's and Rob's(review) mention of them: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpageRDCOKUMA-OGSBBR.html

Great for heavier swimbaits and should be fine for pitchin' although I havn't used mine for that technique.
