I would like to hear some comments on having a foot control or hand control for a trolling motors. My problem is that a ton of flyfishing and I am afriad that my line will get caught up and that sucks big time but all comment are welcome. Thanks.

I like the foot control because it keeps your hands free all the time. It's easier to use in the long run. It's a little more work to mount them but well worth it. Just make sure you get one with a variable speed and not a 5 speed. You can match the wind or current correctly and the battery can last a little longer.

I personally own a Motor Guide digital series motor with cable steering. I have had it for a year now and it has been flawless.

Definitely foot control. Trying to fish conventional gear and steer a manual steer trolling motor is bad enough, I can't imagine trying to fly fish and use one at the same time.

The biggest problem is that when you have 50ft. of line out on the floor and you cast and the line gets stuck on something when you go to cast. It's like getting a birds nest five feet in to your cast and reeling it up and casting it agian. I just can't have a ton of junk laying on the ground cause it causes a problem. But I will most likly get the foot control. I just need to wait for them to make a motor with at least 90lbs. of thurst. May even getting the wireless remote system. Thanks for the feed back.

There are plenty of motors out there with more than 90lbs of thrust. Are you looking for a specific style in more than 90lb thrust or something? All of those heavier duty systems are either 24 or 36v. Look forward to seeing your boat pics :)

I dont think there is any way to avoid getting tangled up in the t motor everyonce in awhile, especially if fly fishing. I dont think anyone foot controlled motor is gonna be less likley to get your line than the next.

I have a minnkota maxum 74 and it works great! I would go minnkota over motor guide.

A foot-control motor is "hands down" better than a hand control .
If you went with something called a "Comfort troll" for the foot pedal it would be mounted below the front deck level and less likely to get fly line wrapped around it ( www.comfortroll.com) .
if you could find some stretchy netting (similar to the suff they use for the pick-up bed cargo nets -only with smaller squares)you could mount it over the the comfort troll to keep the line from falling in around the foot pedal but you could step down on it to operate the pedal. You would net big enough mesh squares 2" ?
to allow for reaching thru to adjust the speed control . If you couldn't find such a net you could make your own out of the small size bungee cord material 1/8" ? where ever they sell it in bulk .

There is an easier solution for this. I flyfish a lot too and the foot controlled is no doubt easier to control. I mean, hand control wouldn't really affect your fishing technique like in bassin' but there's more to catch the line than a foot control bcz of the tiller stickin' out. But the line on the floor WILL catch the foot pedal sooner or later. Get a small bucket to put up front on the deck under where you stand while fishing. The line goes in the bucket and comes out easily, so you'll reduce tangles. Works for most saltwater flats guides, try it. Tight lines man!

Thanks Guys. I use the bucket a lot when I fly fish but most of the time when I strip in I miss the bucket. Thats why I cleared out the front of my boat. I did like the cut out with the mesh. The foot control sounds like the way to go.
