I just received the new Rago bluegill and the thing
is going to be a killer. Not just on the bed, it swims
perfect, the tail has the best action i have seen.
And it stands up on the bottom.
This is a prototype and they should be in stores soon.
There is also going to be 6", 6 3/4", 8", 10" trout with
the same tail. Pete A

I still say the Mattlures kills it. Also the same tail design Matt's been working on for a while now.

So bassslayer how would you know it kills any other lure without
seeing it swim first?
What the hell is your problem, this is a place to show new product.
Im not knocking anybody here and you come on here with some stupid
comment. If you dont have anything good to say shut up.
Also are you saying that Jerry copied Matts Tail?
Ok enough with that, my hats off to all the bait makers out there,
for providing us with a number of differant baits to chose from,
Evey last one of these guys like Mike Shaw, Allen Cole, 316, Mattlures, Ken Huddleston, Jerry Rago are making great baits for
all of us to use. Pete A

Great looking bait, not sure if the action is better than matts but matts does look more realistic.

Sid,
Here is the bait your talking about. This is a one of
a kind, it's was a prototype for the Tool. I asked Jerry
about making these for production and he said they would cost
too much for a soft bait. Wish i could help you with this
one but i cant. Pete A

Gill looks sick. Deadstick bait looks awesome too. I really need to develop the kind of patience it takes to just let a bait sit there for a long time.

BassSlayer619, so you know in these days of who copied who. Jerry made this tail a long time ago. Infact Jerry had his trout, with this tail in a few sizes at the Bass-a-thon and showed it to Matt(Matt Lures) and a few other people so there was no copying and the baits are different. These guys are working hard to make baits for us to catch the biggest bass in our lakes and all this finger pointing is hurting the fisherman. I know talented guys making baits that will not enter the market because of this. I am lucky to work with Jerry and also fish alot of guys baits and there is a time and place for most. There is no one bait for all conditions and if you think that you aren't going to be consistent.

I just noticed the baits are up on TW. Is there a difference b/w the two forms of the bait other than the hook? Is the bait w/ the top hook heavier?

thanks,
Nate

bait with top hook is for bottom fishing, the other is free swimming.

i picked up 2 bottom bouncers and 1 free swimming

Thanks for the info, Shane. Whats the approximate ROF on the two of them? How's the action?

in my opinion i would say the swimming is like an rof 5 maybe a little faster, the sinking bottom bait is like an rof 12 give or take a few on both.

Does anyone know if a stinger can be added to the one with the top hook? Thanks.

Posted by swimbait, Mon Apr-03-06 04:06 PM
There is no wire eye on the belly of the one with the top hook. To add a stinger, you'd have to run something off the line tie or off the top hook.

So as is which one is better for bed fishing?
1379, RE: New Rago Bluegill
Posted by swimbait, Mon Apr-03-06 04:10 PM
That's a goooood question. I haven't thrown either of them yet but I've been staring at them thinking about how to rig them. I like the look of the bait but if my past experiences hold true, it will be hard bait to land fish on. Gotta keep thinking and come up with somethin' clever.

i would say the top hook bait , although i did lose some fish on it, i rigged a stinger on it and its workin great now.

I have not recieved the baits yet but i think the swimming action will be superior to the matt gill, on the other hand the Matt gills paint job is better with the rago lacking on detail. They both seem to be great, i'll have to see how they compare on the water though. Do you guys prefer one over another, for open water swimming action the choice is obvious but for the beds? Thanks :-)

i actually like the rago bluegills alot better, way better swimming action, and they sit on a bed really nice. the swimming baits a really nice as well, alot of tail action, and looks really good. when swimming a mattlures, it seems like alot less action to me after seeing the rago bait. just my opionion.

Personally,
When bedfishing I have higher confidence in the painted bait. When a fish has time to sit and study its victim I want my bait as lifelike as possible and that leads me to the mattlures gill. I've yet to actually hold the Rago so I can't give a complete opinion on the matter other than that.

Well lets see. This past week at Santee Cooper a bunch of the B.A.S.S pros were using my bluegill including Aaron martins, Mie Ike, Byron Velvick, and Jerrett Edwards. I got a call from Byron saying that 3 or 4 guys in the top 12 were using them too. He also told me they got a bunch of footage of guys catching big fish on them. Hopefuly it will be on TV but he couldnt promise me that. I have also recieved an email from Jarrett telling me he has won tons of money(I cant remember the exact amount) swimming them so I guess the action must not be that bad :P But what do those guys know? I was also told most of the guys were running stingers on the top of the bait back by the tail or just behind the top fin. I recomend doing that with my bait and/or Jerry's bait when bed fishing
I think every fishermen should buy one of mine and one of Jerry's
then eveybody would be happy especialy Jerry and I :7

Hi all. I have a Rago bluegill and I have used it a few times now. The action is like a Huddleston but with about half the wobble. It is very tight. the tail moves back in forth quickly. The first time I casted it, it appereared to have very little action at all but once I got a real good look at it in a pool I could see the tail moving. It isnt bad it just wasnt what I was expecting. Besides good action is decided by the fish not us. The bait is made with a harder plastic and should last through a bunch of fish. The details are nice and I believe it will catch fish. So far I have used it 3 times with no bites or follows. I also use matt's gill and I have a ton of confidence in it. I like the action and have caught a lot of fish on them, both on beds and casting. I have actualy caught a fish with the bait just sitting on the bottom, not on a bed either. Both baits should work on beds but I prefer the way Matt's will pop back up on its own when the mail is beating on it, plus it is a lot more realistic. Jerry's will sit if you make it but it will lay on its side when it gets knocked over. Honestly I have not fished the Rago bait as much as the Matt lures but it is hard to use another bait when I have so much confidence in the first one. Since I have had the Rago the score is 3-0 In None of those 3 were big but I have caught a bunch of big females bed fishing the Matt lures. I am sure the Rago will have its place it is a nice little bait, but I like prefer Matt's

Ok enough with this comparing stuff, it's getting a little old.
Im getting sick of all this who's baits are better. Every bait has
it's time and place, everybody (bait makers) is making a great contribution to all of use who are looking to catch thophy bass.
I never hear poeple saying stuff like the roboworm is more realistic
than a zoom worm, or a rapala swims better than a poe's.
Bottom line is fish with what you have confidence in and if you dont
like a bait dont buy it. Dont come on here talking crap about baits,
i dont want to hear it and im sure most other dont either.
I also hear Mike Long has caught nice bass on both gills the Rago
and the Mattlures but than again who's Mike Long? Pete A

I, for one, like to see these discussions of what lure is better for what situation. I wish there were more for other styles of lures.
