2331, Hello (new french), question about Mike long swimbait rods
Posted by ben, Mon Dec-10-07 01:29 PM
Hello, my name is Ben . I m a french fisherman. I fish bass and I often use little swimbait for fishing in france. I dream to go fishing on one of your celebrity lake in California: maybe the next year for one month.
I have a question about two rods. I still have two rods for swimbait but I want a stongger rod for big swimbait. My stronger rod is a DEPS ( 1/2 - 4 oz) 8 pieds, heavy regular action. It s a nice rod; but for fishing with some big swimbait( more than 4 oz) : I believe that it s not so strong. The "regular" action is very long to put in action for the shooting (cast - compress).
I have seen the Dobyns Mike long swimbait rod 8 pieds heavy action on Tacklewahrehouse. But, there are nothing write for this rod ( how many oz ?). I have seen too the Dobyns champion swimbait rods and they are very nice.
I would like to know if someone can help me for to make a good choise and if some fisherman knows and can gives their mind on the "Mike long swimbait rod 8 pieds heavy action". If this rod is a good swimbaits rod and if it s so strong for to do "big big" cast with more than 5 oz's bigbait.Thank you for your answer.
Excuse me for my bad english.
You have many luck to fish in a bass country dream. In france, it s very difficult : many fishers eat the fish and don t think that fishing is a game. The bass not become very big.
( And thank you for (had put) bass in France after the second war when you came in France ):-)

Ben
I have not used that rod, I really like the Dobyn's swimbait rods though and also the Powell's, although I like a few more inches of handle behind the reel. I dont think you would be dissapointed if you purchased a Dobyns or Powell rod for swimbaits. If you cant find the lure ounce rating just use the lure length rating they provide or do a web search for those rod manufacturers and you will find the info you want there. If you get to California call me at (805) 407-3331 and Ill take you out on lake Casitas. There are some pretty big bass in there but they dont come easy. Welcome to the forum.
Peace, Rich

Hello Ben,
Nobody knows swimbait fishing like Mike Long does. It sounds like you are looking for the 806 ML SB (8 ft. 6 power Mike Long Swim Bait). I have this rod and love it for chucking Huddlestons for monster bass. This rod is a full grip, 8' Heavy-Fast action 1 piece rod, rated for 20-40 lb. test. You can throw heavy baits from 1-5oz. with this stick. If you need further info, check out dobynsrods.com

Good Luck with those French bass!

Thank you for your answers. For to do big cast, I should take (8', 1pc, 20-40lb, 1-5oz, Hvy Fast Action Mike Long Swimbait Casting Rod)?Or maybe a harder action (Dobyns 8', 1pc, 20-50lb, 1-7oz, Mag Hvy Fast Action Swimbait Casting Rod). If I often fish with a (BBZ 5 oz) and I want to do "strong cast" : what s the best choise to your mind ?

I would like to know too if someone "see, try or fish" with the new castaic swimbait: Mike Long's Signature Series Swim Baits. It s a soft swimbait or a hard swimbait ?
Thank you, good fishing.(excuse me for my bad english)
:)

Ben, your english is good enough for us fishermen:-) , If you want to throw the largest swimbaits, go with the Dobyns 807 MAG HSB, It's a brute and will allow you to make a " Strong Cast" with a BBZ, or any other big bait. It is 8' rated for 20-50lb, and 1-7 oz baits. Put a good reel ( calcutta 400 series) on this stick and it will do all you ask of it. Glad your gonna get to fish the Southern Calif. lakes, heck there are guys who live here and still have not been able to make the trip. Hope you catch your PB and do it on a Dobyns rod. Hey if you do, go to www.Dobynsrods.com and post a picture and enter it for a chance to win another Dobyns stick. :-)

Good Luck

It s OK, one day, you will see my picture with a giant. Maybe too, with a french big bass.
This year, I nearly fish four or five days every weeks. I had search and I found many lakes for to do some big bass. I had good "results" this year and I took some beautiful fishs " (for the france). But now, I want to find on a lake some giant fish .
I saw three bass on this lake and I think it could win the actuel records bass' europe ( it s not a very high records for the "north american bass"). Maybe , if I will have a little chance to catch it but maybe it s not a bigger bass.
Thanks for your answers ( I will take english lesson in few time and I will have a better english : it s very long for me to write a message.Tchouss :-)

Ben,
Your english is understandable and it's at very least a second language, that right there impresses me!
It sounds like the 807 MAG HEAVY Dobyns rod is right for you. You will be able to throw anything you like on it.
THank you.
