I had a chance to fish the new Roboworm EZ Shad swimbait. I used them to fish for Calico bass out of Dana Point on Friday last week.

The baits swim with a fantastic wobble and good tail kick. You can feel the bait vibrating on the rod tip. I tossed into the thickest kelp I saw and worked it through with no hang ups. I even caught a few legal Calico in the process :) The EZ Shad is similar to the other Hollow Body type baits on the market, but they are solid. The baits have a slit in the belly and a split top fin to allow the hook point to hide inside the bait. They also double to protect the hook point from catching obstacles such as grass or timber.

The plastic they are using is very durable. I had one bait produce 7 Calicos and had numberous short bites by little 'cuda and short Calico. You could see the teethmarks but the bait never lost its action or fell apart. The hook up ratio was good when the fish commited to the bait. I like how the hook point just rides in between the top fin. I did not skin hook the tip of the hook back into the bait and never had an issue with the bait sliding off the hook. I bet you could catch well over 30 largemouth on one bait as long as the coil spring holds on the nose of the bait. Good for us, but bad for Roboworm :P

I used some weighted hooks that I picked up a couple years ago while working at the ISE Sacramento show. The hooks are some small company that made the hooks for Basstrix type baits such as the EZ Shad. I can't remember who made them and I apologize. I went with the 5/0 in 3/8 ounce. The hook worked perfectly. The hook is similar to this hook http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage-OTLW.html

I fished the Stocker Trout color and SXE Shad colors with good results. I expected the Perch color to work very well on the Calico, but they were all about the white belly baits that day. I'm sure all the colors will work at any given time. I really would love to see some saltwater colors in this bait. Maybe eventually it will happen.

I can't wait to try the baits for largemouth later this month. I expect good things to happen while using them.

Thanks for the review. I plan on picking some up soon, I'll have to see how they hold up to stripers :)
