3787, Why Goldfish Swimbaits are the future!

Well after sticking the 11.7 last night and seeing what looked like a goldfish in her mouth I decided to investigate further on a goldfishing expedition. I know it sounds dumb, but hey I wasnt expecting to catch any mabey just spot one. Anyhow I showed up to the lake and almost immediatley say 3 large goldfish swimming around together I tryed to snag one which is really hard since there pretty qucik when a line hits them so no luck on that one. So I set up a drop shot w/ a sz 8 hook and a reall small pice of bright yarn like a shad rig and well belive it or not I cought 2 there just overgreown feeder goldfish I guess anyhow they were about 1lb4oz mabey a tad bigger I didnt weigh either of them because I was in a hurry to get them back in the water one was pregnant and stuffed with eggs (bass food) anyhow if these things keep spreading we should be looking into some goldfish swimbaits (I think river2sea makes one now but its small)

Here's some trivia on Cyprinnis Cyprinnis (closely related but seperate from Cyprinnis Carpio). Yes, the ones you caught are likely just large feeder fish. Illegal for bait in many / most Cali waters. Might want to check out the regs for your local ponds.

Wild strain Goldfish (likely the offspring of farm raised parents)are VERY common in many, if not most Cali lakes. They are also really common in the Ca Delta (and legal for bait, if caught from that same water) and the Stripers hammer them ! :-)

The wild strain fish are just kind of gold / bronze, with a single, small stubby tail. Domesticated ones can vary from a gold / bronze, to bright orange, white, black, mixed..... and they can have a single small tail, a large fan tail, or even a double fan tail. All of these variances have been selectively bred for in Asia for thousands of years.

BTW, I have caught several of the wild strain ones from 4 lbs, all the way up to 10 lb 4 oz on night crawlers ! (anything will eat a crawler) C/R a Trophy Goldfish :-)

Peace,
Fish

TM,
You gave it away man...now I know. I wont say anything. I caught an 8lber there once. I caught her on a Charlie swimbait that was supposed to look like a carp. There are alot of carp in there also. Good job man. That is a hard place to fish. Why night time?
Later

Thats why goldfish are illegal to use as bait, they establish themselves and compete with natives.

Years ago, I was shocking a lake up near the Oregon border. I started shocking these odd fish. I hadnt been in Cali for that long, so I just figured they were some kind of weird west coast carp. Turns out they were all goldfish, the bronze/gold variety. And they were big, like 3-5 pounds. Pretty cool. But, they were there because people were using them for bait.

Optimum has always had a goldfish swimbait and Persuader American makes goldfish dropshot baits. The River2Sea jointed goldfish cranks are pretty cool but yea, they're on the small side.

I always see 2-4 pound goldfish at Berryessa every spring and I keep kicking myself for not having the bow in my rod locker...

Yo, TM, check out the Ospreys on TW for a similar carp-like pattern. I thin I saw a few of their colors that might look good as for carp. They were the closest swimbaits I could find like size and color wise, so check'em out.
Oh, yeah, about carp. People do use them for bait. My local lake is just friggin' infested with the little suckers. Both wild and domesicated. Some are huge too. They travel in pack of like 3 or 4, including the really big ones! Every year I see at least 4 or 5 20 lb.+ carp 'round the lake. I personally hate them because too many = bass nest raiders. But I know that the big bass probably make a meal out of a sluggish carp or two every once in a while!
