There are only a few places close to the LA area that have fly fishing possibilities. One would be the San Gabriel River and the other would be Big Bear Lake. In addition to those there are a number of "pay" lakes where they stock lots of trout that you could probably catch fly fishing if you really wanted to. The San Gabriel from what I understand is a small stream and can be decent for fly fishing. Reports I have read in the past inicated that small terrestrials were good like ant flies, or black knats.
Big Bear can have good fly fishign in the spring and late fall. You need a float tube to really do it, but I know that guys do well on wolly buggers and streamer type flies there, usually on sink tip lines. I have been there in the spring though and seen lots of surface activity from holdover trout. There are probably some local favorite flies that could be found at the local tackle shops.
If any of you guys know any other areas close to LA that offer decent trout fishing, it would be great to hear about them.
