If you are interested in driving a bit northeast then head to the Kern. I've always had excellent fishing there throwing spinners and bait dunking but it is definitely a hotspot for flyfishermen in the winter especially. Try the powerplant north of kernville and riverside park. I hear the locals are still catching them despite the diminution of flow. The locals also run a fine webpage that has tons of posts on it. Some of the exchanges are downright funny on the message board.
