15770, Where To fish swimbaits at Casitas?
Posted by BassFly, Fri Jan-06-06 02:58 PM
I'am heading back home for a couple day for some bassin at Casitas and I would like to know some spots to hit up. I do have a boat and I want to throw swimbaits. Thanks.

The best spot is behind the bouy line, just watch the vids on swimbaitnation.com (sorry I couldn't resist but the fishing back there looks awful fun). Other than that, I don't really have a clue. From what I hear the lake is getting pounded so I would expect to have to work hard to get bit and just stay with it all day.

Those are pretty cool Video's. So I guess it takes being on T.V. a lot to be able to fish those "behind bouy" areas?? That was probably the same area Ike was fishing also...

At many lakes in SD and some in So-Cal you can basically rent the lake or rent the off limits areas. The typical deal is that it has to be for a press event so that the lake will get some good publicity out of it.

I think about stuff like that and there's two sides to it. On the one hand you get to go jack a bunch of fish which is totally fun. On the other hand, you typically have to do something in the press to promote the lake as a result... which inevitably means that more people will go to the lake and pound it, especially if you fished anything that wasn't off limits and people can get a read on where you were fishing. If you're taking photos, it's easy to hide your area, if you're taking video ... that's a bit harder.

I think in the long run, I'd rather not show off at the lakes I fish regularly by catching fish behind the bouy lines or otherwise and showing it around. I just like fishing the lakes when they're not packed with boats I guess and I've already been down that road when I used to show all my pics and post all my reports. If someone offered me San Pablo before the opener and said go for it, or Chabot at night from a boat or whatever, I would sure consider it, but in the end I'd probably turn it down.

But at the same time, you can easily see how a touring pro like Ike or Byron, they don't care about going to Casitas and showing it on video because they won't be back any time soon so it's no biggie. The attitude down there may also be that Casitas is just pounded anyway, so what's another 20 boats on the weekend, but that's just speculation on my part.

Anyway, I hijacked that thread pretty bad, so my apologies. As far as the original question of where to fish at Casitas, I couldn't tell you but I do know that the lake is loaded with big bass, so you are probably going to be putting your bait in front of some even if you don't know the lake that well. The key to catching them, like anywhere, is to stick with it all day, check all the depths from the 50-60 foot range on up and just adapt and learn as much as you can as you go.

Thanks. I went 1/9-1/10 and got none to hand. I had one rip the tail off my hud. and that was it. Everybody that was there said it was slow as well.I also had to go durning a full moon too. I did get to try the Hot Maps system and it worked killer. Now all I need is a trolling motor and I am set. At least it was better then sitting at home in the snow.

We went on 12/26 and lucked into a trout plant. I got skunked but my fishing partners got 3 on Huddlestons: 6-8, 10-6 and -- per the Rapala digital scale -- 13-6. That mother was huge. Got 'em all in about 25' of water about 20 yards down from the marina. Supposedly that whole stretch is good.

Yeah, outside the marina on both sides are good from what a guide told me. So is the sunken island and the back side of the island. I got my only grad when I started to fish some good looking points. thanks.

P.S. The other side of the bouy line looked very tempeting the second day. }(

I was able to get so good info from a guy that use to fish with Matt Newman and fished that lake every other day. That got me going to head back down for another couple of days at Casitas.
