17199, seeing males on beds
Posted by BassMan, Tue Mar-25-08 02:03 PM
saw males swimming around and on beds. When I threw a bait up on the bed they spooked then about a minute or 2 they came back. Not interested in the bait at all. No big females so was wondering are they up preparing for females? Are the females close by? Water temp is 64 degrees. My guess is its about ready to happen but hasn't yet. What do you all think......BassMan

No not a stupid question, I just think everyone gets beat over the head with the spawn questions this time of year and kinda tunes out...just my observation anyway.

I think you are right about your assumption. The males move in first and get the bed ready for the ladies. The females usually hang out a bit deeper and move off and on (up and down) depending on allot of different factors, but I believe they are almost always close by.

I have a very hard time sight fishing and typically try and fish deeper where I can't see the fish and they can't see me. How deep depends allot on water clarity.

I have found if you just keep casting back to the fish you will end up pissing the fish off. That is when the fish will bite. I've staid on a bed fish for more than 6 hours once. From time to time I would leave and give the fish a breather. This would normaly be when the fish would take off for a longer period of time. Then I would come right back and through to the bed. The fish destrouded a ton off trailer off mying that day. I never did catch the female! She is the larges fish I've ever see.:-( personaly. Every year she comes up onto the same flat as well. I have not seen here yet this year.

pull the male off, then the female will protect the bed. cast right back and bother her.

I've found that casting to where you don't see the fish down the bank works good. If you can see them where you're at, chances are there are more further down.

been playing with the bed fish lately. i've noticed, at casitas at least, that some males are holding tight to the shore and the females are about 5-10 feet away. some fry in the water, but not sure if they are baby bass or what. females are not at all interested in feeding. pulled a male off one bed and the female never came over to protect it, which leads me to believe she still has her eggs. i'm no expert, though.
