18398, July - Lake Tahoe / Fallen Leaf Lake

Stayed at Lake Tahoe for 8 days for family vacation. Chambers landing. The lake is huge. Not many people seem to fish there. An article I read said there are 220 million crawdads in the lake. We tried to catch them with bacon from a few places along the shore and caught zero.

Saw one kid on a private dock who caught one crawdad. Ah well. Didn't try for trout. Lake Tahoe seems to be all about private access. A huge chunk of the shoreline is privately owned.

At the outflow of Lake Tahoe, right below the small dam, there are tons of giant trout. 4 to 8lbers. Stacked. Like wood. Brown trout and rainbow trout. More on the brown trout side. A cool sight to see.

They were letting a lot of water out from the lake but if you sat and watched awhile you'd see mega trout after mega trout milling in the outflow.

No fishing is allowed there. The Truckee river from there down looks beautiful. Didn't fish it. My parents and sister took a rafting jaunt down the upper section and saw a few large trout pass by.

Fallen Leaf Lake seemed interesting so we drove the 1 lane road over there hoping to find a place for Derek to cast from shore. The access there is minimal. There's a 150 foot stretch of public beach on the inflow end of the lake. That's it. The rest is private save for the campground which is a 1/3 mile walk, too long to bring Zacky boy.

So we sat there casting a stick since there were 30 other people crammed in to this tiny area. Some kids on a private dock had some crawdads in a bucket.

The vacation was great. The weather was amazing. We all had a great time. But the fishing in the area was not very kid friendly. We never caught a thing.
