i decided to give carneros another shot after school today. it was all foggy and cold, but the water was really warm. my plan was to throw buzzbaits, poppers and jigs and see if i could hook up. when i got there, two other guys were launching their float tubes. i threw the buzzbait for a while because there was a nice breeze blowing, but got nothing. i switched to jigs for a while, nothing there. and poppers, nada. i talked to those other guys and one guy got three fish on jigs, the other guy had nothing. so, i flipped jigs for the rest of the day, still couldn't get bit. man, talk about frustrating. i've still got a lot to learn about this lake. i fished a different area of the lake this time. the conditions really varied. the clarity went from probably 6 feet to like 3 depending on where i was, and there was wind in some places, no wind in others, glassy water in one place, wind waves in another place. i found some good cover that should be holding fish, but couldn't connect. i'll give it another shot this weekend.

Brian:
It might be a little early for a consistent buzzbait bite at Los Carneros. But later on in May through September, you can get into some pretty good topwater fish, especially early mornings and late in the day. The flooded brush on the left side of the entrance to the creek (before you get to the footbridge) is a good area in the warmer months for buzzbaits.
This time of year is definitely the time to be flippin jigs and plastics. Look for little pockets and "V's" formed by the bullrushes and flip your bait back into the cover and work the edges tight. Keep your eyes open for movement of the bullrushes too. It usually means you spooked that fish, but you can come back a few minutes later and get it.
224, thanks for the info

hey,
yeah, i figured it would be a jig bite. i tried flippin jigs for a while, but didn't get bit. i'll give it another shot this weekend. yeah, i got that buzzbait fish at that place by the creek you were talking about. i'm thinking brush hogs. watermelon/red flake ought to do the trick.
