5457, BIOLOGISTS ISSUE OPINION ON KLAMATH COHO

A comprehensive water usage plan will allow both Klamath Basin farmers and endangered coho salmon to survive, according to scientists commissioned to study the conflict.

In order to ease tensions in the water-starved Klamath River Basin (near the Oregon-California border), biologists with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) have been studying the coho salmon population since February.

NOAA Fisheries concluded that the Klamath Project, which provides irrigation water to area farmers, will not jeopardize coho salmon if specific water management conditions are met.
