Had some free time so I headed over to Castaic upper for some shore fishing. The water is real low.
Started off with a jig on the right shoreline for nada. Made my way down the dam and caught one on the fall with the jig. Some of his friends were following but didn't want to bite. Made my way back along the dam with a senko and missed one. Continued down the dam near the boat ramp and worked the senko. Felt the familiar tick and got another. Called it a day and headed back to Irvine.

Was on the lake the same day.A great looking day for fishing. The water was in the mid 50's and partialy stained in some areas. We fished jigs in the morning for a couple of chunks, and it was tough! We cranked some deep diver crawdad patterns and caught a few more fish spaced out over the next few hours. All of our fish were up tight in shallow water-3 to 7 feet on moderately sloping banks with chunk rock mixed in.All near the main body of the lake.

The water level has dropped severely over the last couple of weeks.I figured the fish would back down at about the same rate.Around 1 PM I decided to try and throw a small jerk bait up tight to the bank since most of our bites were there.I tied on a rattlin rogue in black and chrome and was bit on the third cast.A nice 4 pound fish.We continued to catch fish from 3 to 6 pounds until the lake closed. We had many doubles during this period.

I believe the oncomming weather front was the reason they went on a tear, but I am sure this pattern will catch fish during the next couple of months.Black and gold was also hot,but probably due to the overcast weather. We had a few smaller fish on the dropshot oxblood,brown/purple jigs-plastic,but definately the big fish were on the reaction baits.I fish Castaic regularly so stay in touch.A lot of guys had a tough day that day-We got lucky. You might be the lucky one next time and help me out. This pattern has saved me many times, and won me some money too !!! The suspending baits outfished the floaters 3 to 1. Good fish'n BURGIE.

Thanks for the info, it's good stuff to keep in mind. I'm debating whether to go this weekend. If I do i'll try out a jerk and see how that goes. Do you have any idea why the water level is dropping so fast? Is this the norm?

I don't know why they dropped it so fast, but probably due to the forecasted rain. I posted another trip to Castaic for yesterday. The conditions were about the same as last week except that the water temp had dropped a degree or more. Since the jerkbait bite was so good I stayed with it. In the morning I had a lot of nice fish follow it to the boat but no goes. I knew it was time of day or something since the fish seemed a little interested.
Finally when the wind blew the fish got with it. I caught a few on cranks and jigs, but the jerkbait in blk/chrome was hot. One guy came up to me and asked how I was doing. He had one fish for the morning. I told him and then showerd him by catching one and losing one while we were sharing info. I never saw him the rest of the day but figured he did ok. I am using a suspending 4 in bait. I put my boat as close to shore as I can, cast right on the bank about 6 in away then just straight wind it fast till it hits the rocks. I then keep a steady retrieve. It's not the traditional pause and jerk method. I experimented with various retrieves and this one for some reason has been better than good for me lately. I have always fished but therebait this time of year but for some reason this year it has been red hot. Let me know how you do? I caught fish every area I tried but the fish were definately in wolfpacks. Certain areas had a lot of biters.GOOD-LUCK....
