1029, The albacore got in the way of our Opah fishing!

I hate it when you're trying to fish for Opah and those annoying albacore keep taking the bait before it gets down to the the opah :)

Went on my cousins boat out of Morro Bay yesterday. We got 4 albacore for 4 guys on the boat and 2 very rare Opah. From what we heard it's extremely rare to catch one so when the second came up we were in shock. They fight really good - almost exactly like tuna (I guess - I didn't catch one so I don't know first hand) except for the bite is more like nibbling (which I do know first hand because I think I had a third one nibbling on my plastic but he didn't stick). All the albacore were over 35 pounds and I got the biggest at 46 lbs. (my personal best and my personal best fish not counting sharks or rays). We were fishing 16 - 18 miles out. Some other guys got some good fish including a 65 lb. pig around 12 miles out.

After the second Opah we called on the radio asking about them and their table fare. I guess they are excellent to eat. One guy told us that Monterey Bay Aquarium will pay $5000 for a live one.
