I saw alot of these reels on the last trip I went on wondered what you guys thought. I'm looking for a good 20 sized reel for heavy bass/light yellowtail applications and these are pretty cheap. Tell me what you think.

Hey Calicokid,

Not all Newells are created equal. If you are going to
purchase a Newell, please ask the salesperson to bring out
several reels. Make sure the freespool and the bearings are
good. Finding a good Newell is worth it. They are light and
easy to work on. They will last a long time.

You can make these reels stronger by replacing the graphite
handle and star drag to metal. I also replaced the graphite
frame on my 332 and 338 to the Accurate aluminum frame. It
looks great and makes them much stronger. I also replaced the
drag fiber to the Penn HT100 fibers. They are smoother and
last longer.

I hope this helps.

Hey guys. Been a long time since I've posted anything here
but I'm back for a while. Anyhows, I saw this topic and just
wanted to say you can't go wrong with the Newells, especially
the 200 series for what you wanted. I've had my 229 for years
and it's always handled itself superbly. Everything from the
bass and the Butts to the Seabass, Yellows and the Tuna. Never
give it a second thought as long as you keep it serviced and
change the drags regularly. Great reels if you ask me. JMO.
