11007, Calico Hunting - Sat. the 18th

Sorry for the late report! Computers torn apart at home then server trouble at work.

I was invited to fish with Captain Larry Heron & his friend John aboard the Calico Hunter 3. Our destination was the boiler rocks along the front side of Santa Cruz Island. Larry noticed serious surge in some areas that are usually pretty calm so we started bouncing along the rocks just above Prisoners. It was like being in "Calico Class" with Professor "Larry Heron". I was being schooled pretty good early on but managed to find my groove. The Bass were very cooperative eating just about every color Big Hammer we threw. The Browns & Oranges worked especially well early with the greens doing the job as the sun lit us up. Fishing with Larry was an absolute treat, a true professional of our sport. By the time we had worked up & back a good portion of the island we had caught 89 legal calicos! A good 30% of those fish were in the 3.5 to 5lb. range! There were very few short bass & quite a few rockfish of various species including 2 lingcod, one of which was around 27" (Sun. BBQ, everything else released). Thanks again Larry for treating me to the best day of bass fishing I’ve seen this side of the border.

Your going to make one He!! of a charter boat captain!
I've already got friends asking when?
