12044, SCI/paddies report 5/15

Our Toads and Tails charter went off as planned. Apparently, the hype about the south coast yellows was a bit overblown and the skipper warned us of that. Don't get me wrong, many party boats and PBs got tails from 4-12# yellows the day before or so but many blanked. Anyway, we found 63 degree water at graylight just around the back from the east end and it got colder the further north/west we went so we turned around. We picked a few bass there but had a much better bite around the frontside on a boiler point and then up to a beach along a cliff about a mile up. The bite was about even between the perfect 5 to 6 inch sardines and swimbaits. As far as yellows and kelps, we didn't find many kelps and neither did the rest of the fleet. We noted that there were no temp or current breaks to be seen and thus nowhere for scumlines or kelps to be concentrated. On one, I got bit twice with only the head of the 'dine crushed--yellowtail? We got on one that yielded some of the fattest bonita I have seen in a while. Bill Osborne won the "artificials only" jackpot with a bony on the yo-yo iron. Nice job on the fish Bill! Prize was a Shimano calico rod and reel. My low points were being next to last to show up at the boat (how's that for leadership, lol?). I also left my reel bag in the car but fortunately we were only as far as the bait receiver. Doh. We are doing a tuna trip in July and in Sept, so keep a look out for them.

thanks again David for setting up the charter. The Fury is a very comfortable over-night boat. The fishermen were all very friendly. The fish were more than willing to cooperate and the weather was beautiful. It is still kind of earlier to get disappointed by empty paddies, but there were enough fish around to still get the adrenaline going at each paddy we found.
The bonita was excellent on the BBQ last night. :9

Sounds like a fun time. At least it wasn't one of those overnight boat rides. Wish I could've made it. I had a blast with you guys on that Twilight trip, and the Fury is a good boat with a great crew.
