14247, Santa Rosa Island Massacre 12/30
Posted by CalicoHunter, Mon Jan-01-07 12:12 PM
With the weather window we had I couldn’t help but put together a final freezer filler trip to Santa Rosa island. Its not too often you get to fish the Talcott area, so it was no problem finding some buddies to go last minute! I had my buddies Matt, John, and Ken along for the carnage, the ride out was awesome till we were about 8miles from the spot, where it got a bit on the snotty side, (had to back off to 20knts :-) ) so we get to Talcott and its hooting, but I figure “were here” so lets give it try and if its too bad we will run around and fish the back side. But from the first drop it turned out to be wide open on nice reds to 41/2lbs we could have been limited out in 30min but got picky real quick when saw how good it was!
We ended up keeping 36reds and 4 chuckles( I like them) and letting go another 40-50reds (60-100ft) plus another 80-100misc rockfish,( did I mention it was stupid out there?) a couple of 12-15lb sheeps and also caught 6 bonita to 11lbs! The bulk of the catch was made on 5-6in Big hammers. Weather actually backed off and stayed nice till about 12:30 where the wind started to come back up, but once we got a few miles off the island it got real nice (back in at 27knts)…Captain Larry
