230, 2-Day Morro Trip

Some friends and I tried out the two day trip, out of Morro Bay. It headed north to Cape San Martine, which is just north of Salmon Creek. Plenty of reefs to fish there. Sam, the captain, kept us mainly in the deep waters, about 200-300 ft. range. He took us into the shallows for about an hour and a half each day. There was plenty of lingcod in these unfished reefs, however a lot where short. My buddy picked up a 13lbs. ling on the jig. In fact, jigs where the only thing fished the whole trip. Fish of the trip was a 18lbs. red snapper. The trip wasn't all I expected it to be, but we all caught our limits.<BR>Gilly, the cook, prepared quite a fiest for us on Saturday night and the scenery was great. I would suggest checking this trip out if no other fish are biting down south.

Dude, that sounds like a killer trip. I live in San Jose. Can you run down the specs on cost, drive time to Morro, and what kinds of rigs someone should bring? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanx

From Monterey, Highway 1 will take you about 4 1/2 hours and the 101 will take about 3 hours. Highway 1 is a lot more scenic. The trip cost about $200. Price included bait, bunk, and 5 meals. It leaves Friday nights at 11:00 p.m. and returns Sunday at 5:00 p.m. I fished Jax Jigs the whole time. Anywhere from 8 to 14 ounces. For line, 30 lbs. and greater test is recomended. I fished 25 lbs. test and lost a big fish, it snapped my line right in half. I also packed a few diamond jigs, misc. weights, hooks, and ganiuns just in case, but never used them. I suggest taking them just in case. You could get away with 6-8 ounce jigs in the shallow water, but like I said, we didn't fish their that much. I suggest making reservations. Call for trip times.
