SD Bay, 12-29-01:
Stated off good with 7 legals between 5:15am and 6:30 or so. Then it took until 11:30am to get 6 more. Mixed in all this was 5 or 6 shorts.
Best fish were only 2.5 and 3#. No real hot bait or color, but purple got the most. They did eat the XPs squid for the first time in months though. Cold water, but air was o.k. and the wind stayed down.

Dana 3/4 day, Sum Fun, 12-31-01:
Tough day. Though I guess not really for mid-winter in Dana. I finished with 8 legals (mostly Calicos), and maybe 4 shorts. Very tough for me, first time fishing the plaid bass from a boat since July. The bad part was the bite. They were hungry, but they weren't aggressive. They were eating like Largemouth, just picking up the bait and swimming right along towards the boat. The waves were pulling harder. This was what killed me, I just couldn't tell bite from wave. A couple regulars did 15+ legals each. The bass were keyed in on the Zoom Superflukes in smokin shad and/or rainbow hologram. Heads were either red (though baits with red didn't work) or yellow. I caught fish on everything from the Zooms to grubs. Spent a good 1hr and a 1/2 with Steve's big grubs, but only had one bite ( that I know of). I went out expecting 2 or 3 fish total, so I shouldn't complain.
But, I really wish I'd done better. Of course the jokes about me not being in a tube and therefore fishless got old. But, friends can be that way. Fun day, but could've been better. Need some SB bassing I think.

So the rumors are true. Bass really do slow down during the winter... lol. You'll definitely have to get up here soon.

Yeah it was good for Dana, but still Hecko, Hogan, and Shaw smoked my butt. Both in count and tongue. It was fun. Yeah Pica was driving, Wooley was 1rst. I started at the Wharf 5yrs ago with Todd and Chris, went to the Reel Fun for 2 1/2 seasons, then finished last year with Chris and Brian. Great Crew, and great regulars. After being away for 5+ months it was really good to be back. So much so, I scrubbed on the way home.

We only had three stops, Barge Rock, the Inside Ridge (or just outside, I don't remember now), and the Lower End. We only hit the Ridge? for like 45mins. Mostly it was Barge and the Lower End.

Brian, that Treefish trap of yours still running? Think it would float me? If so I'll take you up on your offer at the end of the month or begining of next. How long does that winter bite usually last?
