4982, Shelter, 3-1-02

Launched at 8:45pm and fished until 1:30am. Not bad fishing, finished with 16 legals and 1 short. Two fish in the 4-5# range, a couple 3's and the rest were 1+. Smoke/sparkle freaks and 9" grubs yielded the most fish, though 2 were caught on zippers.

The fish were hitting hard, but rarely more than once. I missed a whole bunch just from laziness. I was rather relaxed and didn't feel like staying alert all night. I also found an area that was seriously holding, but I had to fight the current constantly. So I left that area (after pulling 3 spotties) in favor of less effort. The Shelter Express was running at about 3/4 warp speed, so drifts were quick but productive. I worked the slack areas around the Navy point for a while and then worked my way back to the launch area. I circled around there for a while, but it was slower than we've had there lately.

Most exciting part of the night came after a large tug, pulling a giant barge, passed by. I could here the wake coming for a couple minutes before it finaly hit. It actually was better than I had anticipated, but I was lucky too. There were only 3 waves, and I rolled between high spots, thus staying dry. It probably would've washed across the whole tube if I hadn't been so lucky. Biggest wake I've ever had to go over. Good way to keep the heart going though.

Be back there again tomorrow,
