5038, flourocarbon leader for halibut Posted by , Mon Mar-04-02 11:45 AM
Me and my buddy went halibut fishing Santa Monica Bay last friday and ended up with 5 keepers - one 20 pounder. Also we caught a dozen shorts and a dozen or so sand bass. our goal was to test flourocarbon line vs regular mono. May be lucky but I fished 2 rods with flourocarbon 12 pound leader and he used 20 pound mono leader and I caught 4 out of the 5 keeper halibut and the majority of the shorts. At one point he said - Damn that stuff works. We were both using squid. In the florida keys where I fish a lot, all the guides have switched over and swear by flourocarbon. Who knows... It's expensive, but hey, anyway I can get an advantage over those babies I'll take it. Anyone else try it recently? Scott

I'm very sure that flourocarbon leaders work. I surf alot and the fish can be very line shy. As soon as the new line came out I bought some and tried it. I noticed that I would get more hits, but also catch bigger fish. So now I use everywhere except in rocky areas because even though it's basicly invisable underwater I feel that it gets damaged easliy. So now I catch more perch, corbina, halibut, and bass then before. Anthony

As far as I'm concerned the jury is in. I've seen countless threads on the subject, looked at the pros & cons, etc. The worst anybody has said, getting bit-wise, is that there's no difference. Many, many more report that it gets bit better, especially in clear water on sunny days or on a slow pick.
I HAVE, however, seen quite a few people report that some brands of FC have strength issues. So far I've only used the Stren FC leader in 60# and found it to be plenty strong. This summer I will be using FC leaders on my lighter bait rigs. We shall see! :D
