7590, good beach gone bad? & short report from Sands

Tied up some flies last night expecting to get an early shot a Haskell’s this morning. I arrived at the parking lot at 5:55 to find the gate locked. Bummer!!! I am assuming the Baccara resort got tired of dealing with late night party’s on the beach and started locking the gate sunset to sunrise. Monday morning I saw some people camping out on the beach so that could be the issue also. They might have been locking the gate all along and I never new it, but I usually get there pretty early 5:30 to 6:30 and I have never had a problem before.
I thought about waiting for the Maintenance guy. I usually see him around 6:30 or 7:00. He’s a nice guy always asks how’s the fishing? The other guy that’s always there is an old man in blue coveralls collecting cans he also like to stop and talk. I am sure he had great can collecting on Labor Day.

Well after waiting a few minutes I decided to try out sands. Parked at the west end of DP hiked out to the point and started fishing in front of the Snowy Plover nesting grounds didn’t see any Corbina working the shallows so waded deeper and started working my way back to the point, not one strike in an hour of fishing, SLOW.. I probably would have done a lot better fishing with motor oil grubs or swim baits, but this Fly fishing the surf thing has got me stoked, so I’ll keep working it.

On the way back I decided to stay on the beach and fish my way back to the truck. On the east side of Campus point large flats with some rocks and Kelp (too much Kelp today)

I have a question for you guys’ have any of you ever fished that area from the beach? What about the beach along Del Playa?

Any way the morning wasn’t a total waste, I saw a great sunrise, I mean fantastic sunrise
