9345, Santa Barbara Report For 3/23
Posted by CalicoHunter, Sun Mar-23-03 08:15 PM
Launched out of Santa Barbara harbor today with my buddy Cliff Phillips, first off we hit the one mile area out front for 9 calicos and 1 sand bass, after that bite died we ran down to the horseshoe rock off Carpinteria, where we spent the rest of the day. There we had great uphill current and a pretty decent pick on mixed bass with a 2-3lb average. The bass wanted the swimbait literally drug across the bottom with very few fish on the retrieve. We finished up at 12:30pm catching and releasing 42 mixed bass with calicos to 3.5lbs and sandies to 3lbs, all caught on 4-5 Big Hammers, although the 5in outfished the 4in, colors wise anything brow/orange/red fished on ¾-1oz Hammerheads, with a little bit of calico cocktail for taste.
Water temps ranged from 54.0 in the am to 57 in the early afternoon….Larry

Needles to say the wind we had after the storm turned over the water pretty good. The fish must really be in shock considering how warm the water has been all winter. Having it drop like that definitely sent them hugging the structure. If the water was still 59-60 like it was before the storm those fish would have come up off the rock. Thanks for the report. The current should start pushing us some warmer water soon enough, I know all needless to say. With any luck this will be a good season. I would encourage everyone to get out on the water to enjoy the bite and in doing so you will be showing your support of sportfishing which is all the more reason to get out there. I'll see you on the water.

Hey Don, at the one mile the biting fish were in 56-64ft of water, and down at the shoe they biting fish were out the out side edge of the reef in 58-64 ft of water rather than on the high spot(45ft)...Larry
