Went to Hendry's beach today, fished the peak high tide and tried my new barbless hooks. Well, it was a total failure. Catch and release? Ha! Try hook and release. I hooked maybe 7-8 perch that came unbuttoned (never usually happens to me) and only landed 2 perch that were 9 and 10 inches.

The most interesting part of my day came when I was driving back up Las Positas towards hwy 101. This silver mitsu eclipse swerved into oncoming traffic to pass me (illegally), gave me the bird and yelled something. Then at the stop light the guy gets out of his car and threatens to kill me as he runs at my car. He was yelling at me to get out of my car, that he was going to kick my a**. The dude had a stun gun in his hand and ran towards my car, clicking the stun gun as he ran. Just like in the movies, it made a zapping sound. He got about 3 feet from my car, but fortunately the light turned green and I floored it. As I looked back, he was threatening another car.

So, for any of you fishing Hendry's beach, its a great place to catch perch....but look out for a silver mitsu and a white guy, about 30 years old, 6', tan, dark hair, running around shirtless with a stun gun. AND, if you're reading this and you ARE that guy....guess what buddy, I called 911 and gave them a partial license plate and your description. See your butt on COPS ;-)

The problem with barbless in the surf is it can be difficult to keep steady presure on the fish with the surf pushing the fish forwardard then helping to pull the fish back as opposed to a river which only pulls a fish in one direction. Circle hooks have a low fatality ratio in conparison to traditional hooks and the fish stay on pretty well. That's what I generealy use in surf.

Sounds like you ran in to Mad Max out there on the road. It could have been worse though. You could have ran in to him on the beach.
Better luck next time and I'll see you on the water.

I had a real strange experience happen to me several years ago. Unlike the thread above I didn't feel that I was in any danger but nevertheless (one word?) I was in that zone where one wonders if one is a candidate for Rod Serling's Classic.

It was very early in the morning around 3:00 A.M. and I was fishing an incoming tide at short street beach in Oceanside. I had caught a few nice Spotfin Croakers and was really enjoying my time away from the wife, work and the "grind."

It was in July. Weather was warm and it felt very good to be alive. I was by myself for as far as I could see north and south. It was one of those times when yone just really feels alive.

Ok. Here it is. I was baiting my rig with sand crabs after beaching a real sweet toad Spotfin when I heard a female voice behind me ask the question, "got a light?" I casually turned around to reply when I noticed that this incredibly beautiful young woman was standing next to me in the NUDE! I played it like she was fully dressed and we carried on a conversation for about 15 minutes talking about everything from surf fishing to rock and roll.

After that, she said she was going home to make up with her boyfriend. Never saw her again nor did I ever catch her name. I don't usually drink in the mornings but on that occation I had one serious Champayne Brunch! Whew!! :7
