11244, Post Spawn Swimbaits.....

Hi guys!,

I may be fishing Casitas this coming Monday and I was wondering what type of swimbaits to throw after the spawn?

And what kind of areas to look for?

I know this is specific info on a popular lake but I thought ide ask anyway :+

I was there last week and they were still on their beds but there was many empty beds also. I threw a lot of different swimbaits in the deeper areas off of the beds. But I caught nothing.
Was I considered a bed fisherman that day?
Any suggestions guys?

Once again thanks!!

Three good baits in post-spawn:

Triple Trout
Lunker Punker
BBZ-1 Trout

Post spawn is the time when you want to start working your bait faster and with more erratic action. Especially at a lake like Casitas where the bass are likely to school up, willing to move long distances on a bait, and chase things close to the surface.

At all lakes there's a period of 1-3 weeks where fishing in post-spawn just sucks. If you can see the fish during this time they are often hunkered down on the bottom recovering from spawning. We jokingly call this 'log mode' because the fish lay on the bottom like logs. You'll see fish laying in grass like this if its available.

Once that's over, get out on a nice breezy day in the afternoon and you'll probably get better action. Have fun :)

Man that's good info, thank you...
When you say these fish lay aon the bottom like logs, I take it your refering to the females?

I got everything covered but the bbz.

Maybe I'll hit it just right...maybe....

I've heard the first couple of days are slow because of lakes getting hammered from the weekend anglers.
I hope not.

Male bass in post spawn are more likely to get out and roam around on flats. You'll see them just cruising along in shallow water looking skinny and beat up. Those fish can be caught a lot of times on finesse gear or crankbaits/buzzbaits/etc in dingier water.

Females are what you'll see doing 'log mode', just laying on the bottom or by a piece of wood. They only do it for a few days then they're off to feeding and being more normal.
