11963, My top secret frog for giant bass at the Snag Proof Open

The snag proof Delta tourney is just a few days away so I stayed up late last night fine tuning my frog selection.

Being that I only own 9 snag proof frogs, this did not take long... But I did concoct one totally top secret frog. Which I will now divulge all of the details on here. With Facebook consuming everyone's online time, no one reads the true Internet anyway right?

It started with a blue KC Dragonfly colored Bobby's Perfect frog. I picked the blue frog because the one time, 2 years ago, when I threw this blue frog, nothing would bite it under any circumstances. The thought of dragonflies mating with frogs probably have made the bass uncomfortable.

I selected the Bobby's Perfect frog because Bobby is the man on the Delta and any frog with his name on it is the frog you should be using at the Delta. Of my 9 snagproof frogs, 5 are Bobby's. Bobby has taken a good chunk of money from me over the years :)

With paper towel in hand, I took a bottle of white nail polish and went to work. Nail polish was probably a terrible idea for painting frogs, but it was the first white paint I found in my box-o-paints. This bottle was labeled as "White On". Get it?

With sloppy strokes I painted the belly and sides solid white. Just a bright, solid white. Then I removed the blue strands from the legs. Leaving only chartreuse.

Nothing personal against the blue strands, but white and chartreuse is just such a good delta color combo. I mean... it works on an LV 500 chartreuse shad so it should work on a frog - right?

After 2 coats of nail polish I opened the kitchen window, staggered away from the fumes, and let it dry. An hour later I picked it up to take a look and left a nice thumbprint on the belly. Talk about custom.

I considered autographing it and selling it on eBay as version #1 of the top secret blue and white derelict dragonfly special. But in the end it was so pretty I had to keep it.

My theory on this color is that it's the perfect topwater version of an LV 500 in chartreuse shad combined with a chrome blue speed trap from the right angle. Seems logical. Can't wait to try it in the tournament. It's been a few years since I've caught a frog fish so I'm getting pumped.

Photos later.

You are so gonna slay on the froggerfly combo. Don't forget to put your alka seltzer (tm) in the belly. Bassfishes are drawn to froggerflies that are farting.

This is what happens when you fish for spotted bass too much. Your frog is 3/4s of the way to morning dawn.

I bet it will work, though :-)

Is it legal to fish two frogs at once? I remember seeing it in a magazine a few years ago and Tag Watson shot some video of his version earlier this summer. Tag tied on his first frog and left a ~2 foot long tag line off the knot. He tied the second frog to the end of the tag line. Tag's video showed that he was able to get both frogs walking on the retrieve.

cv says he got the ultra top secret buzzbait frogs. Phew. Don't know if I will have time to paint any pink :( Bummed.

What's so funny about the frog tournament is that everyone spends all their time before the tournament trying to do things to the frogs to make them not be like the stock frog.

Maybe my stealth double-cross move will be use a stock frog.

What is that, the i Motion frog with no action? Heh.

How come check in ends at 9am and blast offs start at 11am? I can't wait to sit in my boat for 2 hours tomorrow morning baking in the sun :)

My nail polish frog was a total fail. Never paint frogs with nail polish.

Ah the spectacle of the frog derby :) Good turnout, 169 boats I think? Nice weather, a little windy at the end.

Fishing did not seem very good. We didn't practice and had no expectations but dang, it was hard to get a bite on a frog by any standard.

We had 2 that committed to the frog and weighed 4.2 pounds. It's a 3 bass limit. Heard 12lbs was leading when we left. Big fish an 8lber.

The other year we fished this thing we blanked day 1 and caught 12 on day 2. So by my math, our day 1 catch increased 200% :)

Who knows what tomorrow will bring. We'll try all new areas. I caught my only bass on a stock white bobby's perfect frog!

Day 2. Morning edition. Blast off 6am . Weigh in 12:15. We tried new places and fresh faces. The tide was low.

Cris had the hot hand today and caught all of our fish. 4 keepers to be exact. The bite was slow and random, just like yesterday. You'd get a fish, then nothing for an hour, then a fish, then nothing for 2 hours.

In between were endless 8 and 12 inch bass that would slap at the frog. We would yell giant! and game on! as these monsters attacked. It was pretty sad to be honest.

Never had any exciting chances. Weighed in 6.4lbs. Didn't stick around, just headed home. If I had to guess, it probably took 14lbs to get paid.

I didn't learn much this tournament other than the fact that the Delta is still brutal, especially if all you can use is a topwater. My plan is to wait a few years before going for largemouth on the delta again.

72 to 80. Clarity was good in general. South franks was in the 6 foot range. East Delta and South was nice, 3 to 5 feet.

Weed growth is thick this year. Hyacinth is out in places I've never seen. Blocking sections of smaller canals and stuff. I think a lot of fish are buried 200 feet back in mats where you just can't get at them.

There's decent life around this year. Bluegill, golden shiners, redear, etc. Saw a lot of craw super shallow and a lot of craw body parts in the livewell. The fish are healthy, there just don't seem to be that many of them.

Delta will be better in a few years I bet. There's a big size group of 1.8 to 2.5 pounders right now.
