i've read rob's jig fishing tips and those are really great, but i need some help on super-clear water lakes fishing with jigs. for example, in san diego, there is lake dixon, san vicente, otay lake, etc.

i barely fished jigs besides for bedding bass, but i still need to get better at that.

i went to dixon last monday throwing my 7" stocker trout and my 7" kangi primu and jigs all day and didn't get a single bite.

any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Jigs are awesome. There are not many lures better than a jig. BUT, why is is that the only person who gets them on jigs in San Diego is Mike Long? I don't know why, I mean I do because he's Mike, but those clear lakes with heavy weeds like San V, Dixon, Poway (less weeds), etc are tough lakes, and you sure don't hear about anyone nailing them on jigs very often.

I think if I was going to try to get bit on jigs I'd go with browns and greens mostly. I'd probably scale my jig down to a smaller size (except for sight fishing) and I'd use lighter line, florocarbon 10 to 15lb test if possible. One thing I would try for sure, and I was actually thinking about this last night because I have some buddies down your way and I read all the SD reports and stuff, was using PORK. A piece of brown or olive super pork. 3x1" or bubba pork even. I was playing with some different pork trailers in the fish tank last night and I bet you could get bit on a jig and pork down there if you stuck with it. I'd also use twin tails on a smaller jig like the Assalt Stand Up jig. The stand up jig is tied really "punk" like with hair sticking out everywhere, and it tends to bounce off of weeds better and not clog up, especially if you go down to 1/4oz.

All you gotta do is take your jig and go out and BELIEVE that you will get bit. It will happen.

Of the lakes you listed, Otay has by far the best jig bite. I know guys get them in Harveys arm on jigs and also in the tulies sometimes.

As far as San V goes, the jig bite I have heard about is very deep (50 feet +). I know the quality of the jig fish in that lake is usually better, but I dont know too many people who have ever caught a limit on jigs in SD lakes.

A jig bite in SD is very tough to come by for me. I know guys get them on jigs, but, NOT ME.

ha, sounds like a familiar story at dixon, welcome to the club :-) I haven't done too much damage on the jig since I've been down here. I love jig fishing and I wish I could get something together with the jig but it's a different ball game down here than it is in central and northern cal. I've thrown jigs at dixon in the few spots where you can actually fish a jig at that lake. I've had two or three really huge fish nose up on my jig before but I haven't been able to get any of em to open their mouths.

I think you (we) gotta realize how much different these san diego fish are than basically the rest of the world. You'd be hard pressed to catch a fish at dixon blazing through the tullies throwing a black/red buzzbait and a mann's 1 minus, but do it at the delta and you'll probably end up with a limit or two. I'd say scale down your jigs, make them look as natural as possible and fish em deep. If you can get flip fish on a jig in san diego you'll be my hero. I like brown/orange for some reason. I've always done good on that color. Try to locate some rockpiles or rocky shorelines and give it a go.

i went to a pond by my house today for about 45 minutes.
this pond has water coming into it and then our of it and then it actualy runs al the way into hodges. i know this becuase i have followed it on foot all the way to the lake its about 2 miles plus the dey part of hodges makes it 2.5 miles

oh ya, back to the fishing at the pond, i got my first jig fish that wasn't on a bed. the water clarity is like 2 feet in most parts of the pond and i got him in about 3 feet of water about 5 feet away from me. now i have toget a clear water jig fish. yikes!
