Well, it's not a "Trophy" Bass by any means but I am no longer a "Swimbait Virgin :-) ".

I threw Matt's Male Bluegill in 4-5' of water in a small cove and as I was reeling it back just fast enough to get the tail moving, I felt the lightest of thumps thru my Kistler Helium 7', 6" Extra Heavy Casting rod and I set the hook. I truly thought she was bigger than the 3lbs, 13 ozs she weighed but I'll take her:) .

Now I've got the confidence to throw one more often and it feels GOOD!

were you casting and winding or was is a slow bottom retrieve?

What size trebel do you put on it and do you impale it into the belly?

Thanks and yes, they are 'purty'!

I was just reeling it back just fast enough to make the tail 'do-it's-thing'--not too fast, not too slow and of course, that will depend on the amount of line retrieval whatever reel you are using has.

I can't remember the size(I'm at work now) but it's the biggest size this hook comes in:

http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jhtml?id=0000010112958a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&QueryText=mustad+weedless&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jhtml.22&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=mustad+weedless&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jhtml

I went with the weedless treble due to the snags found in most of the ponds I fish in here in the deep South. She had the trebel and the stock, dorsal hook stuck in her as she inhaled "the whole thang".

d smith:

It might be a matter of that they are following it, but they just are to far behind to notice

Make sure you have good sunglasses that you can see through the water, I know that they follow it, it is just hard to see them.

After evey time i reel in a cast, I look into the water very carefully looking for that "submarine shadow", and sometimes if you see that follower, try not to spook it.

Dont throw the swimbait at it, beacause it usually spooks them, but throw a plastic worm right on top of him, they usually take it.

Also, try dropshotting a Castaic bluegill or baby Sunfish. This works great when you find a small wolfpack or fish following your swibait up to the boat. Big fish dont always eat Trout exclusively!!

But you don't get any action in the tail dropshotting the bluegill, do you?
