i got the rod and just due to reports and pics i also went ahead and ordered me 3 ms slammers 2-9" slammers and i think one 12" .


got and advise or flaw i should keep in mind...i will be throwing these on 30lb cxx p-line. i will be using a florocarbon leader too thinking about 40lb test? or no leader at all?

there was a post i read about this guy loosing a fish he hooked up while throwing his huddleston on casitas. the fish was on for 4 mins, riped drag, went into a tree, sawed off. should my drag be locked up? i got a stout rod and heavy line, what are the do's and dont's?

I'll only reply to one part of your post and that is, I would never use a leader for l/m Bass. Why do it? You're just adding extra knots that can fail plus, it can interfere with the line guides/tip when casting.

30LB CXX might be a bit overkill...I would go with 25LB CXX....for both the 9 in and 12 in models.

I wouldn't worry about florocarbon leaders on the Slammer....I think you could get away with it...but, because its a floating bait, you don't want that floro leader sinking your bait any and messing with the swim. It could be done, just my thoughts here.

25# CXX is pretty damn strong and durable and is what I use for the Slammers...

No need for a leader with the slammers, especially fluoro since it sinks and youll want to just wake that bait (well, thats what I do anyway). 30 does seem overkill. With 25 and the stout rod you should be able to just crank that fish in.

I tighten my drag all the way down and just steadily crank fish in. However, I always have it in my head that I may have to react quickly and provide drag should a good fish go nuts. I havent had to do that yet, but almost did it a time or two. Its like everybody on here always says, the longer a good fish is on the better chance you have of losing it. Just get that fish in as quick as possible.

I use 25lb floro so I cant get my woodbaits to dive alittle when the line sinks it will help them get alittle deeper. I like to leave my drag loose enough so a big fish and take some line out so if there not hooked that great the hooks dont just pull out.

I think that the leader thing is a bad idea, when the fish are gonna bite it doesn't matter if the thing is tied on with neon rope, when they bite they bite hard and they mean it. I would use 20# at the very maximum. I throw all my big baits on 15# Triple-x and have never broken off I've even pulled in a couple of trees with the stuff. I know that line brands are personal preference but the triple-x is rope and it casts really far. Try not to get too technical with your rig I would worry about trying to fish the right place at the right time. I wouldn't recommend the flourocarbon thing at all, its too brittle and when you get a big fish close all thats between you and your trophy is that stuff, it's just a bad idea. Definitely keep your drag locked down to hook the fish and keep it hooked, (you can always loosen it if you think you need to). Hope this helps,
