7577, Frog rod length?
Posted by fongster, Tue Feb-28-06 12:04 AM
I am undecided about the length I should get--7-2 or 7-11? I will be fishing mostly from shore and just a little from a boat. Target distance is probably reachable with either length. It'll be a combination of open water and weed or algae patches but NOT thick matted grass. I guess that I need to do both deadsticking and walk-the-frog...the latter sounds hard with a 7-11 or a 8 foot flipping stick but CA pro Bobby Barrack excels at it. He uses an 8-foot flipping stick almost exclusively. Maybe a 7-6 as it is right between the other two? Thanks for your thoughts.

Longer is better. They deny it, but its true.

I use an 8footer whether in the kickboat, on shore,or in the bassboat. Walks just fine and the leverage is awesome.

Hi Wade. I'll in 15 foot gregor aluminum or a tube. Lotta fishing from shore, too. Sounds like the 8 footer is the way...I figure I can use it for flipping, occasional casting of trout swimbaits and pitching kelp stringers too. I'm putting Curado 200DHSV with 40# braid on it.

Hey David that 7'11" Crucial flipping stick is a good frog rod. We have wrecked a lot of fish last year using those rods and Sumo frogs.

You use the Heavy, not the MH? Thanks.

We used both the H for heavy cover and the MH for more open type water with not as much cover. Go by Shimano they have some in the customer service area you can check out. They have a bunch of rods in there right now.

All good advice, but I will say this -- go with what you know. If you're used to 6-7' rods, it may be a bit awkward to jump to an 8'. I do a ton of frogging, mostly in heavy pads, all with a 6'10" (and primarily from the front-deck). Conventional wisdom may say that's too short a rod, but it's what I know, what I'm used to, and it works (well). It also depends on where you're fishing from and the cover; If you're doing a lot of walking the frog from shore, an 8' rod seems like overkill -- very awkward and tough to work. My experience has been that the shorter rods help with casts among overhangs, as well as presenting the bait from shore or while wading/tubing. As for rod action, a bit softer will help the bait "walk." Key in open water. Just don't sacrifice backbone, cause those fish will find that pesky cover if it's ANYWHERE nearby. Best -- d

My favorite frog rod is a 6'10" V Rod, VCA610H- I can throw a frog as far as far as it needs to go with 65 lb. Power Pro and no worries dragging anyone out of the muck at Margarita. I'll be up there in two weeks, probably not throwing the frog but it will be nice to see water there instead of dirt!
