16354, Lake Siskyou Report
Posted by aparsons, Sun Aug-24-03 01:17 PM
Well, I made my journey to the Great Northwoods. We hung out at the town of Mt. Shasta for a few days, & I got to fish Lake Siskyou. Beautiful lake - probably the most scenic bass lake, with a view of Mount Shasta, that I've ever fished. Tough bass fishing, though. Water clarity has to be at least 15 - 20 ft. I fished one evening & managed 2 dink smallmouth. I went out again the next morning & got blanked - I was trying bigger baits for bigger smallies but came up empty. That evening, I talked to a shore angler who claimed he caught a 7 lb largemouth on a live bluegill the previous evening, right by the dam. I didn't know there were largemouth in the lake, but I thought, what the heck? I'll try fishing there. So, the next morning, I went out there & managed two nice smallmouth & 1 dink, one on a crank & the other two on plastic worms.

One weird thing is that the guy who claimed to have caught the 7 lb'er told me he'd never caught a smallie out of the lake. That's strange, because the place is loaded with them, even if most of them are under 8" long.

I also did a little trout fishing in Trinity County (caught a couple of small ones) & tried Ewing Reservoir near Hayfork. It's a shore-fishing only deal & I only got a couple of bites one afternoon, so I wasn't overly impressed. It's mostly a trout/salmon/steelhead scene around there.

I did fish out of a round float tube that my son usually uses & all I can say is - thank God for U-boats & kickboats. It's a small Siberian & is about the most uncomfortable float tube I've ever been in.

Congrats to all of the top finishers at Blue Lakes. I'm missing at least one last name for the standings, so if anyone knows Jason's last name, please e-mail or post.
