Poll question: Who would like to see the open moved to the Delta next year?

it's a happy medium as far as distance. Some guys live kinda down south, and some guys live kinda up north. I think the delta would be a good medium. Definetly worth a shot, seeing how Clear Lake gets pounded alot. I say, why not give it a shot.

even though it is a bit far for some the logistics will be much more difficult at the Delta. More people would have to run, are there enough spaces for campgrounds(?), where would we hold it out of(?), how many tourneys are going on at a given time (this would also fall into the previous question), more dangerous since it is narrow in many parts (I've had two close calls in only 15 trips), more dangerous since there is current, etc.

Yes, it would be cool but there are too many additional factors and complications at the Delta compared to Clear. If we were boating clubs it would be different but we are tubers and kickboaters.

How about if BNT held our open in the delta and SCBBC held theirs at Clear Lake? Even if we did hold the open at the delta I would still like to fish at least one tournament at Clear Lake; it is about the only time I make it up that way. I vote for giving the delta a try at least once.

You raise some good questions however I think the Delta is big enough that logistical issues could be worked out. Some specifc responses:

* a bit farther for some - It would depend on where it was held of course and of course it would be father from some or most SCBBC members. Clear Lake however is twice as far away (or more) than the delta for most BNTers.

* Running - a *lot* of people run at Clear Lake. Maybe we could get an idea of the percentage at the open next week. Does anyone keep track of how many run/stay?

* Camp grounds - there are parks with camping in the Delta area. Not at Middle River but I am sure we could find something workable.

* Where to hold it - a good question. The delta is big so this would need to be discussed. There are however many, many marinas, parks, launch ramps, etc available.

* How many tournaments are being held at a given time - you fish Clear Lake and are asking this? The delta provides the opportunity for tourney's to spread out over a much larger area. When I fish Clear Lake I see a lot more bass boats than on the delta, tourneys or no.

* More dangerous - personally I haven't had a close call yet even in some of the busier areas. Current can contribute to danger though, for float tubes in particular so we should probably avoid areas with a lot of current.

I think the delta would be a great place to hold the tournament. Just a matter of finding a decent centralized Camping area. The delta is only 15 minutes further away from clear Lake for the SCBBBCers, and closer for most the BnTers. I think the location is great, and a great fishery as well as clear Lake, its nice having a variety of places to fish, as well as different conditions. Though i do have to say, the delta can be hell when the wind really picks up! I say give it a try

I think the Delta is a better choice in May. Clear Lake is usually post-spawn & very tough. Plus, the Delta is a more cental location for most of us Bay Area dudes. Some of the logistics re: camping & a good launch site would have to be worked out, but I think it would be worth a shot.

I was thinking about areas to do something like this and maybe even moving it to june or july when the delta gets red hot. I can only think of Brannon Island off the top of my head. There is some places on bethel island that might work as well. this is totally only a thought but could be interesting. Dang maybe I will try and run 2 a year one at clear in may and one in july at the delta. Before you know it we will be having 6-7 a year that are this big at diffrent locations.


Lakes just brainstorming

Just a thought but I was thinking that Shasta would be a cool place to have an Open or a Invitational.Not only is the fishing good but it would be a neutral lake as far as people having more experience on the lake.The big downer is it`s quite a drive especially for you San Jose guys,but I think it would be an interesting tourney.

i would like to see it there as well. Rasta was suppose to do one there this year but it fell apart. Maybe they will try next year

The delta would be cool although I don't like to run that much.I think there wouldn't be as good a turn out from non club people simply cause some folks think we are crazy for tubing/kickboating there.I think the danger issues could happen anywhere.Yes I have been almost ran over by 3 houseboats in a row!They all just waved and said howdy!(frickin morons)I would also like the idea of a shasta tourney even though it is far.
One other thing about doing the delta (especialy in the heat of summer)is the fish mortality issue.remember not everyone will have an airriated livewell and this could kill some fish. I like fishing clear lake and realy enjoy the 2 events that both clubs put on up there.

I would really like to fish Shasta again; it has been 12 years or more since I've fished it. That was my very first experience at bass fishing and I've yet to have a day with those kind of numbers. I couldn't keep smallmouths off my bait; darn near a fish on every cast! I understand that spots have pretty much taken it over though...true?

about delta tourneys and dangers are a couple things.

One, on the tourney deal - if there are a couple big tournaments going on it would eliminate that area to launch. The Delta has some good areas to hold things but things can fill quickly. Yes, there are many areas to fish and I enjoy it but still think the logistics of it could be difficult. But, then again, if John's organizing it I have no problems!

Danger - Those two times I've mentioned were VERY close. One came screaming through the tulles (blind) and missed me by about 15 feet. The other saw me and had all of middle river to go but still had to come within 10 feet of us. This was above the rock barrier. I'm not sure if it had to do with the two of us catching more fish than them but they were not very nice (to say the least).

Not trying to say no but just playing devils advocate. I like the Delta myself but would prefer to fish it in a boat!

I do like the idea of a Shasta tourney. Actually for some who live near the freeways it can actually be a shorter drive (time-wise) for BnTers than the SCBBBCers. Only problem I see is who would organize it.

I do agree its a lot more dangerous there then anywhere else we fish. I have had close calls probally a dozen diffrent time over the years, some i have hit with my rod tip at 60+ mph. I know it would defer a lot of newbee's to the event for sure. I bet we could get close to 40 though. As far as launching areas. If we went out of Franks it could work. There are quite a few places to get in there that are not very popular. There would be lil to no bassboats,tournament guys or skiers. Its all in a 5mph zone and its a long one.Kinda defers the boaters. It is good water as well. Brannon Island is a sweet place to camp but more people would run from this spot and its far from a lot of the areas tubers like to fish.


This could happen we might try a regular 2 day tournie this year in june or july near franks and see how it goes, kinda do a test run.

I hate the delta period. the last 6 times i have been there, it has been 30-40 mph winds out there, and its no fun if the weather sucks. cleaklake gets bad too, but you can always find soem sheltered areas there. and also when the wind picks up there so does the crank bite, well it has for me and jeff anyway. but it mgith be fun if the weather is good, it really sucks trying to kick thru the current with the wind at your back.

The wind can suck on the delta; we've had a couple of tourneys which were pretty much blown off the water.

Anyway, don't you remember the tourney (I think it was Holland Tract) where it was blowing so hard that no one could fish it? Not even the GREAT John Lake? The only people who caught fish that day were the ones who hooked up in the first 30-45 minutes....before the wind came up.

Next year i'm fishing alot of delta BNT tournament because i'll be driving! I'd like to see it switch off! Plus in the fall the delta is great!

Keep the Open in the spring at the Keys. Keep the Invitational in the fall at State Park. Have a two-day tourney in the summer at Frank's Tract, call it the 'Regional'.

but i like what steve says, maybe do 3 a year. one at the keys in the spring, delta in the summer, and state park in the fall. plus with being at the delat in teh summer there a lot of hot women. not taht any of you married folk can look. Im not married so i can, well not yet anyway. :)

I like the Idea of a 2 day event on the delta. I would like to see a 2 day tournament added to the Delta Region schedule. Something similar to the Open & Invitational with lots of publicity, a big camp out & such.

I really enjoy the delta, even with the occasional 30mph winds. That's all part of the game. Tough conditions make tournaments interesting and I find it hard to beat the quality of the Bass fishing there.

As far as danger goes, you just need to stay aware. You really can't do anything about the idiots except see & avoid them before they can do you any harm.

I think there's no better tourney during the year than the Open held at The Keys. Maybe hold it a week or two earlier though... maybe.

I guess I'll throw my $.02 in too. I like the idea of possibly 4 major tournies a year. 1 at Clear L. by SCBBC (did I put enough initials in?). 1 in the Delta by the BnT Delta chapter. 1 at either Oroville or Shasta by Rasta (I guess they're based up there somewhere near Weed, hyuck hyuck). And lastly 1 somewhere South of San Jose by the Bay Area BnT Chapter (yes I know Santa Clara Co's rules for holding tourneys won't work). Just my thoughts for something along the lines of "locational equality".
