#5267, "boating requirements?"

By law what an I required to carrie. I have a 17' with 70 hp outboard. Do I have to carrie a fire extiguisher? what about insurance? Throwable life preserver? Do I have to be inspected and be able to prove that I have? I know I should have all these and I'm working on it but for now what are the requirements? I've done a few serches and its a little confusing with state and federal law, boat size, outboard size and so on. Any help Thank You.

Yes - boats over 16' are required to have a fire extinguisher

what about
>insurance?

No

Throwable life preserver?

Yes, sort of. I believe the requirement is something floating that you can throw. Most carry a square floating cushion.

Do I have to be inspected
>and be able to prove that I have?

Not unless some law enforcement stops you on the water. In 12 years I've never been inspected for safety equipment
