#1661, "Okuma 7-11 Rod Repeort"
Tue Sep-12-06 03:18 PM by Henry Shorr

With the recent arrival of the new Okuma 7-11 swimbait sticks, and as a courtesy to Okuma and consumers I am giving this report regarding the performance of the new rods. I hope this will help fisherman find the right rod for their application. Even though Okuma came out with three new 7-11 rods do not think this series made the current three 7-6 sticks obsolete. Consider them six different rods. When reading this report keep in mind we all have our styles. I tend to like lighter action rods over heavy. These rods were designed by a swimbait fisherman, Mark Rogers.

I have been using the 7-11 rods since early April. The interesting thing regarding the manufacturing of these rods is Okuma hit them right during the first generation. The original 7-6 sticks had three or four generations before the final productions. However there is one change in the 7-11’s. The 7-11 rods that were tested have the same rear grip as the 7-6. As I understand, the production rods have a newly designed pistol rear grip.

7-11 MH: I have used this stick through the summer and have taken fish to 11 pounds. When Mark designed this rod he had Matt’s baits in mind. If you are familiar with the 7-6 MH the 7-11 has a lighter tip. This stick cast very well. Using 30# braid and a 9” (3 oz) wood bait I can cast accurate and long with just my wrists. I feel very comfortable when I have a fish on with the MH, the soft tip gives me confidence that I will not pull the hooks out of the fishes mouth. This stick is too light for Hudd sized baits. The MH is my new favorite stick.

7-11 H: So I’ll tell a story. At the end of April, my first time out with this rod, I had a one-hour bass fest. The bass had trout corralled on a large 10’ deep hump. It was chaser city. I managed to scrape 7 fish between 6 to 9 pounds. This somewhat parabolic rod preformed very well. It is my number one choice for the 10” platinum and the ROF 5 Hudd. Also the rod worked very well for wood baits. If you can only afford one rod for the use of wood and plastic this rod will work for you. This rod is a lighter, and more parabolic stick than the 7-6 H.

7-11 XH: I have the least experience with this rod. When Mark brought over the rods it was the time of year I stop tossing the bigger baits. Even though I have limited experience with the XH I can proclaim, use it for Hudds and larger, as the name extra heavy states. This rod handled the 12” Hudd deadstick bait ok but not as well as the 7-6. Even though this rod states XH it is much different than the 7-6 XH. The 7-11 tip is a little softer but still has the backbone of the 7-6. For the heaviest baits stay with the 7-6.
