#5195, "Bad experience at Berkeley Sportfishing Marina"

AVOID sportsfishing through the Berkeley Marina. Sport fishermen have had this repeat, negative experience: you reserve a spot for a rock cod trip to the Farrallones, are explicit that you are going to the Farrallones, the Berkeley Marina bait shop repeatedly confirms that you are reserved for this rock cod trip, and then when you show up the captains and bait shop "bait and switch" and tell you they are actually fishing on the Bay. (With lower fuel costs and shorter days, Bay fishing is much more profitable for the boats).

At 5:00 a.m., with no other options available, most customers will just grumble and get on the "Bay" boat anyway . I just had that precise experience, and many fisherman on other boats have described this deceptive practice out of the Berkeley Marina.

To add insult to injury, when one complains of the switch the shop and deck hands offer a "pot luck" of reasons: the weather just changed, or the other passengers suddenly changed their minds, or the rock cod boats are chartered. Not terribly persuasive excuses when the rationales change three times as one walks down the dock.

For a far better trip, where one actually gets what one is promised, try the Emeryville Marina at http://www.emeryvillesportfishing.com/tf.html. The Emeryville boats and Marina are straight shooters, deliver great trips, and won't con you with the "pot luck" bait and switch.
