#11759, "Tiger Muskie Fishing"

While on a business call... I managed to get 10 hours of Tiger Muskie fishing in with a buddy of mine that targets them regularly. After arriving, he picked me up from the airport at 10AM. We headed directly to the lake and dropped in around noon. It was a blustery day with winds to about 25 which is uncharacteristic of this lake. After fishing spinnerbaits and gliders for about 20 minutes, my buddy hooked one about 38 inches which managed to dive into a flooded willow tree and rip off the hooks. I was hoping to net my first Tiger but it wasn't meant to be. we found an area with lots of window shoppers (followers) but no eaters. We probably had 15 follows in about an hour and a half.

We moved areas and went to a windblown bank that had flooded willows. As I cast up to a willow tree I had one rush out an T-Bone my glider. When I set the hook, it ran directly at the boat at about 20MPH. When I finally caught up with the fish, it was about 30 feet off the bow and when I came tight on it, it ripped off the hook... 0 for 2. I thought that my chances for another were slim but we had a couple more shots later. My buddy had one eat right at the boat but he wiffed on the hookset and the lure came flying out of the water. Two more short bites and we were 0 for 5. hating life. With an hour to go we set up on the same area we started on. We made the same casts but no love. Since the sun was no hid behind the clouds, I thought that the fish had moved out to the secondary tree line. I started casting towards open water with a glider and got pummeled hard. I managed to get the fish out of a tree and slid it in the net. My first Tiger... not a giant by any means but at 37 inches... I'll take it. That was the last eater we had that day.

Day two started way different. The thunderstorms the night before turned the fish neutral. No follows for 2.5 hours and only 1.5 hours to go I went for the realism. Matt sent me a Hard Crappie which I felt would be good since the lake is full of them. Within 5 minutes of casting it, I had a 42 incher cutting a wake across the surface towards the bait. It slashed at the bait and missed but came back and whacked it hard. It didn't get the hooks though. It turned off hard once it saw the boat. After calming my shakes.... I made the same cast and she came at it hard again. This time it turned off half way to the boat as it was onto my game. Left that fish and came back on her after only getting a few other follows on the Crappie in other areas. She was there but wouldn't follow. We missed the feeding window for her.

Anyways... as I say with all of my Muskie trips... All I want is one and I managed to reach my goal.
