#40, "March 11, 2000 Special Report"

After weeks of dreary weather, the sun came shining through for the weekend and Summer, myself and 30 or so anglers boarded the Stardust for the morning run. The sand bass bite had been picking up down at the armpit so we made the 40 minute run to the area under glassy calm conditions. Since it was so calm we set up for a drift, a tactic we used the rest of the day to slowly cover the area. Right away we started catching sculpin, sandbass and rockfish. I had my fiancee Summer set up with some squid and after a few drops captain Jason comes over and says, "here Summer that's way too much squid, let's get you an anchovie." Jason gets a fresh bait from the tank, baits up Summer's hook and hands the rod to her (My 9 foot 900L by the way which is a lot of rod for a 5' 1" gal). Anyway, she drops it to the bottom and nails a nice 3 pound sandbass. Jason puts it in the sack and baits her hook again. Summer drops it down and nails a bigger one!! A nice sandbass about 4 pounds. Two casts later she gets a nice sculpin. So basically she's kicking my butt as well as the rest of the boat! Well we drifted here and there on the armpit and the bite was steady all day long with lots of nice sandies, sculpin, brown rockfish, and even a half dozen or so calicos brought in. They were biting the plastic especially and myself and another guy got a half dozen or so fish each on 5" cardiff plastics swimbaits in cotton candy squid and 5" fish traps in sardine and haloween. It was really a great morning on the water and very relaxing as always. Summer wound up winning the jackpot with her sandbass and we were happy to give away our fish to some other anglers who didn't have any. She also took some great pictures on the digital camera. Tough to beat that kind of a day. Total count for 35 or so folks was probably 45 sandbass, 6 calico, 25 sculpin, 15 rockfish, a shark, a short ling, and some miscellaneous stuff.
Here's some photos from the trip
Summer with her sandbass

Jason working on releasing a short ling cod

A nice sandbass - pretty representative of the size we were catching

And there's me reeling one in on the plastic
