#1357, ""Workhorse" Rod"
Tue Aug-23-05 05:47 PM by J Hinds

Hey All,

I am looking for a rod that is capable of doing a wide variety of chores.

I want a rod that I can use to toss around Mattlures' baits, throw a frog, big jigs, do some calico fishing, toss the rago rat...

I was thinking 7' to 7'6", but I am flexible. I also generally like rods with faster actions than most people.

What do you guys think? A flipping stick? I have a nice flipping stick but it has a short handle, and I just don't feel like it is optimum for throwing swim-type-baits.

I have a few rods that may fit the bill--I have a 7' H GUSA factory wrapped number, but I think it is a little soft for what I am looking to do. I may be wrong.

I also don't want a super-exensive (read super-delicate) rod, this is something that will get used a lot.

Anyone have any opinions of the 2ig flipping rod on sale at TW? Calcutta 715XF? Crucial? Daiwa S or LT? Okuma H?

Sorry, lots of questions; I am just looking for some feedback. I realize that multiple rods are probably necessary for the baits/techniques I mentioned, but I thought someone might have simple answer.

As always, thanks for any input.

Tackle Warehouse recently started stocking the Okuma GS-C-761MH. Although the picture shows the split cork rear grip (or it did previously, they may have changed the picture)it has a solid cork rear grip. It is a tad more parabolic than the Heavy version, it would be a great rod for Calico's, Rats, Matt's smaller baits and OK for Jigs. Just a suggestion.

I forgot to mention... it also has a lifetime warranty

Just got my first Okuma rod; their GS-C-761H for my heavier baits. It has the split-cork handle. Hope to "baptise" it tomorrow.

I've got a loomis mbr 785c in GL3 that is a friggin broom stick. This is a true jig rod that will control a 1/2 jig. I like it for the smaller mission fish too. It's 6'6" though. For 7 ftrs the mbr844c in imx is good as well as the phenix 7 ft. pitchin stick ex-heavy. These are not exactly cheap but you can find them on Ebay for a reasonable price.

I have the Loomis BBR964C, a decent rod for swimbaits, it's rated 1-6oz baits and 25lb line. It's an 8' rod with a long cork handle and it's the GL2 series. It has a decent tip for the lighter soft swimbaits up to 2 oz, you may have a problem setting the hook with a Mission fish on it though, the tip is a bit soft. It's also great for throwing the heavier plug type baits. Throw a Calcutta on it and your good to go. It's not quite as light as the IMX or GLX series but it does its job well for about $170 at TW, check it out.

I have that rod (2 actually), but I was looking for something with a little faster action, and possibly a 7' or 71/2', but I appreciate all of the responses thus far.
