Is this reel too big for casting swimbaits? Never seen one in person. Am I better off with an old calcutta 400?

CVZ253A is better than CVZ300A. It's like a TE300 size but inexpensive.

Besides size, is there a lot of difference between the 253 and the 300?

Yes, there is a big difference. 300's levelwind moves when free spool, but 253's doesn't.

Is that a plus or a minus when tossing swimbaits with heavy line?

Well, Sonny, I just believe that casting is better when levelwind stops. I don't have any accurate measurement on distance difference, but it just feels easier. Also, 253 holds enough line on 20lb mono.
