#1888, "Swimbait Tackle System and Storage Bag"

I have looked at the way Musky anglers store their baits and wondered when a company would make a bag for our needs. I looked at several different companies and the Lakewood Products bags were the best I found. The main problem was that our West Coast style swimbaits have mostly rubber tails or the whole bait is rubber and we all know how frustrating it is to be on the water and take out your favorite swimbait, only to have the tail or the whole bait, bent and out of tune. The number one thing in swimbait fishing is CONFIDENCE and you don't need a bent bait to start working on your confidence. The problem with the Musky boxes is that they are designed to hang the bait by the rear hook. I contacted Steve, the owner of Lakewood Products and asked him about making a Swimbait box. I told him about my ideas and after a few minutes he said design it and I will take a look and let you know. I sent him some drawings and after a few tweaks we came up with this bag. The bag is 24 1/2" X 14 3/4" and 15" tall. It is made up of a ridged frame with hanging compartments on the ends and a compartment to put 3700 style storage boxes in the middle. It will hold a assorted amount of boxes, 10 - 3701 or 7 - 3700 or 4 - 3730 + 1 - 3701 or 6 - 3700 + 2 - 3701 or 3 - 3730 + 2 - 3700, etc. and 4 - 3620's or Falcon boxes in the side pockets. The hanging part of the bag, I designed a bar system with a snap to hold swimbaits by the line tie, so that the tails would hang straight and come out of the bag, in tune and ready to fish. To give you an idea how many and what size baits it will hold, this is what is in the bag in the pictures. Row 1, 4 Rago Baby Tools and 3 Rago 13" Tools. Row 2, 5 Huddleston 8", 3 Rago Baby Tools, 2 Rago Soft Tools. Row 3, 3 Rago 6" Raptors, 2 Huddleston 8", 1 Rago Soft Tool, 2 Rago 10" Raptors, 1 Rago Baby Tool, 1 - 8" Prototype Hardbait. Row 4, 1 - 10" Matt Lures Trout, 2 - 12" Huddleston's, 1 Rago 13" Tool and 1 Rago 13" Soft Tool. The bag has tool storage pockets in front. I added a strip of velcro to the front of the bag and attach velcro to my Kaenon sunglass cases to keep them available. You could add a number of things to the strip. The bag has double D-rings on the back so you can attach it to the pedestal on the deck. The bag fully loaded will float and with the ridged frame you can stand on it and use it for a casting platform or to sight fish from, it will hold 300 pounds. Lakewood Products is making the bags now and I will have them in the tackle shops soon. Now you can go from the boat to the garage and your baits are ready to go, no more boiling baits to get them straight or taking everything out of your bag and hanging the baits in the garage.

David -

That is a great looking bag. I had also been looking at musky bait boxes for possible swimbait use but I wasn't too enthused about trying to modify an existing box. The new bag looks similar to Lakewood's Musky Hybrid case which I've seen go for about $130. Do you have an approximate price for the new bag? When the bag becomes available, I would appreciate it if you post a reply which identifies any tackle stores that are selling the bag.

Tim

David!! ME LIKES!! ME WANTS!!! Only thing I would like to see added is a shoulder strap. I tell you ever since I have picked up swimbaiting a year or so ago I have been trying to figure out a good all around system to store baits in. I just bought a Stanley storage box that I thought was good until I saw this design. I knew we needed a suit case but this one takes the cake!! I hope this thing will fit in the front or back storage area of a Triton :(.

When will it be available and how much dinero

Hey Guys, Thanks for the interest. Mike, you are in luck, it already has a shoulder strap. As for fitting in the compartments, if you could measure your Triton and let me know. The box is 15" tall X 14 3/4" wide and 24 1/2" long. With the 4 3620 boxes in the side pockets it is around 30". The side pockets are perfect to embroider your name or logo on. We can even do it at the factory. With the response I have gotten we are in high gear and I hope to have them out in the next few weeks. I will know better in a couple days. The bag will retail for around $139. I will let you know who gets these first.

Thanks again
David Conway

The bag is big to fit the need, but the double D-rings on the back are to strap it to the pedestal on the front or rear deck. Just keep that in mind.

Oh Cal, Just trade out some of them Steez rods and reels and you can get a NEW boat. :)~~~~~~~

Dave I'll go measure my boat on Sunday when I go fishing next. I'll find a place for it somehow. What boat do you have and will it fit in the compartments?

Dave, I bet you Cal's deminisions above of his boat are going to be similiar to almost everyone's including mine. I think Dennis has a Tr186 but I think the back storage boxes are the same sizes on all Triton model boats which is where I want to put mine. Not sure of everyone elses.

Man I'd sure like to get that box to fit the back storage compartment of a Triton. I know it won't fit in a rod locker. I'd like to know if you can fit it? Any chances of slimming it down some to Dennis's deminsions 24L 13W and 13H. Your not missing the dimensions by much here. Besides I think you would sell a ton more if they fit in most folks boat storage compartment. I do think this design is AWESOME!!!

I'm gonna measure my boat tommorrow

Mike

Actually Mike, I'm not the one with the Triton.. ;) .. I have a Skeeter SX180 which is a little smaller both in length and beam than the Triton TR186.

OK Guys, I got the go ahead to make a second bag for the rear compartment like you want. I am taking some measurements on a few boats and will have it done this week. Any help you guys want to add, get out the tape and give me the specs on your boats. I already have the design, This bag was going to come later this year, but I think you are right about needing it now. I'm just pushing the size to fit most guys boats and the baits.
Thanks again

Too cool David :)

Just for clarification, the dimensions I provided above are actually for the center compartment on my front deck. My Skeeter doesn't have much storage space at all, and the storage compartments in the back? forget about it... lol

Looking forward to seeing the second version of your bag as well. Keep up the great work!

David, You like rock!!

Here is the demensions of my back storage area. It can't be any bigger than this. This is for a 2001 Triton which I think will represent most Triton boats?????? This Height dimension makes sure that the locking latch can go down just a FYI.

My back storage dimensions are
20L x 13W x 12.5 H

My front storage dimensions are
28L x 12.5W x 10.5H

If you make a box to fit these dimensions the microorganisms in my boat won't be able to breathe ie a tight fit for maximus storagus swimbaits

Mike

The new bag is 12.0" wide, 18.0" long and no more than 12.5" high. This bag will have the same bar system, to hang the bait by the line tie so that the bait and tail stay straight. This bag will hold 50 or more 8" and 10" baits. The large bag will be in stores in about a week and a half and I should have a picture to show you of the smaller bag soon and they will be in the stores in a couple of weeks. Thanks to the guys that sent me their measurements of their boats, for this smaller bag. For you guys that bought the Markey's swimbait box. Lakewood Products makes a bag called the 5-Pac Magnum that holds 5 - 3730 style boxes, the same ones Markey's uses to make their box. The 5-Pac holds them in the upright position, perfect for the design. Now if you are like me and have hundreds and hundreds of swimbaits or you plan to, the Markey's fit perfect in the large bag I designed. Go to lakewoodproducts.com and click on tackle bags, they just put my swimbait bag on their site.
Thanks again for the interest and the help.
