What's with all the knock offs? Might as well just call them the Smellcracker and the BBZ2.

Guys, just talked to the boys at Reaction Strike. This bait is a prototype. The Bull Bream will be available for retailers in about 60 days, but there will be some changes made to the bait.

Please understand that this is not a knockoff of the Shell Cracker.
Prototyping on this bait started before the Shellcracker became available for sale. The bait was built from a plastic prototype. Also, it is 6 inches, not 5. It is 4 ounces, not 3. It is double jointed, not single jointed. It has a soft rubber tail, not lexan. It has a snakelike swimming action since it is a double jointed lure. I just talked to Rick and he said they are going to change the eyes, and very likely will make some tweaks to the color pattern as well.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Hmm...Not a knockoff of the Shellcracker INSTEAD they look more similar to http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=32471&posts=20&start=1 which have been being made for quite some time.

Just curious- Since our commie friends from the east (China)
charge you ten bucks each to manufacture these baits, how much
can a hard working American like myself expect to pick one up
for?

Any word on the cost of those bad boys?

Sink rates?

How many different color patterns for each bait?

Thanks, Dbass

Guys, I got a chance to fish the bull bream above. Very
realisitic wobble. Sink rate I am guessing a ROF 8???? Thats
a wild guess tho. My understanding is the price will be
around 30.00 give or take. Should be available in 30 days or
so.

I bought what I THOUGHT was a promising bait at Fred Hall. I
think it was called like the California Special or something,
a surface bait. It looked great out of the box, but when I
fished it, it had minimal action and even when burned, the
joints wouldn't kick.

All the do is rip off other good baits....These ones look no
different.

Eric, I can't speak to what bait you had but I can speak to
the bream bait above. It has a very realistic action. I
showed it to a shop owner the other day at his pond not a few
feet from the storefront. After a few casts he bought a
sizable order instantly.

Good to hear they have an original action, but they don't have
an original look which is displeasing. It looks a lot like the
Shellcraker. If every swimbait company out there copied
eachother we wouldn't have the diversity we have today....

Eric, I'm sorry you feel like the bait above looks like a Shell Cracker (SC). But you know how I know it's not a copy?? Because I DESIGNED IT!!

Let me tell you about the differences.
1. Bull Bream (BB) has 2 joints. SC has 1
2. BB has a plastic tail and a spring to hold it in place, SC has a lexan tail and held in place by a nail
3. BB has an action similiar to a Triple Trout while I don't know what the action is of a SC is like.
4. BB sinks alot faster than the SC where I read here on www.calfishing
5. BB is 6 inches long SC is 5.5 inches (calfishing.com review)
6. BB is SIGNIFICANTLY skinnier than the SC which allows it to work at slower speeds. Here is a picture showing the thickness of the SC from the review on this website which clearly shows the SC as a significantly thicker bait.

http://www.calfishing.com/reviews/bluegill/black_dog_baits_shellcracker/index.html

Here is a picture showing the thickness of the BB. Also shown is part of the mold that I made to make the prototype bait shown below this picture. I caught a bream and cut the fins off and froze it. I made a FULL body mold of this frozen bream. When I got the frozen bream I cut the bream in 3 pieces with a saw. I sanded the edges smooth, countersunk the eyes and cut the notches out to accept the screw eyelets. I then made a mold of all 3 pieces.

<img src="">

Here is a pic of the very first prototype I made of the BB. Notice how there is only one screw in the back. I later made changes to add a second screw for added durability to the bait.

<img
src="">

FINALLY, The reason you see similiarities in facial pieces as well as paint scheme is because the BB and the SC is made by the same mfg'er. I was NOT aware that a CNC milling machine couldn't cut out exact fin and scale details so obviously those details were omitted but show up in the original prototype. Futhermore the paint job you see above WILL NOT BE USED as stated above!! I am submitting my own personal paint schemes for this bait!

Now tell me something if I wanted to copy the SC why would I have gone through all this trouble???

For those that know me, know that I am an ethical and honest person and I have a GREAT respect for Grant and Jeremy. I have conversed with Grant on a few occasions via email previously. If I thought this bait was a direct copy of the SC I wouldn't have made it to begin with.

Respectfully

Mike Bucca

Whatever you say dude. The thing is both of these baits LOOK like stuff that is out there already, kinda like the rest of the baits from this company. A Hudd with a different tail, a Mission fish in some weird colors, a Monster Jack that doesn't swim, now these. I just get tired of seeing mojo stolen from the guys who are really innovating and making great baits.

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here but isn't the BBZ an imitation itself??? Also, tell me if I'm wrong, aren't there a million bream imitations out there in different styles, materials and so forth? Remember Renoysky (sp?). Or Castaic? What about the thousands of other small guys who have shaped wood or poured plastic trying to imitate trout and panfish? Maybe most have not done as good a job as Huddleston or the SC guys but I've seen MANY since I've been around.

Again, not trying to stir the pot but everything we buy here is from people trying to make something BETTER! I have to admit I don't want to be driving a Model T or watching a 13" TV in black and white just because I thought nobody should imitate or improve things. Can you imagine if this site wasn't here because there already was a "fishing forum" before this? Or *gasp* no Lucky Craft pointers around???? I know I would be doomed!

Just trying to put things in perspective!

China is generally referred to as an eastern country, but
since we're talking about history and geography-One of the
most important discoveries the world has seen in the last few
centuries is that the world is round. Actually Christopher
Columbus knew this, as he sailed west in an attempt to reach
India to trade for spices. Spin the globe both ways before you
take your next geography exam. Want to talk about fishing?

That's so Eurocentric. You're in the US and a red blooded
'murican I'm assuming, so China is directly due WEST, across
the Pacific.

But anyway, even the picky Japanese and the most All-American
of lure companies (the PRADCO umbrella, which covers Arbogast,
Bomber, Rebel, Heddon, etc) have their lures OEMed in China.

The subject of 'who copied who' has come up here before. It has come up again in this thread, and it will come up again in the future. This has been going on since day 1 of big bait fishing (anyone want to argue about who invented the AC Plug? ... oh please don't).

As a fisherman intent on catching bass, my thought around lures is "the more the merrier". The more variations, colors, and actions available the better when it comes to the basic goal of catching fish. If I owned a Rago Baby Tool, a BBZ-1, and this new Reaction Strike bait I would try all of them and and use whichever one caught the most fish. As it is, I don't own any of those three baits - but that is my approach generally with copy baits. I try them, I use what works.

Personal experience has shown me that it's usually the first guy who gets it right. That's why I still fish brush hogs. That's why I still fish senkos. That's why I still chuck the Huddleston Deluxe. But I do keep an open mind, and I do try new stuff, and I do review all the swimbait products I can get a hold of on calfishing.com because I'm trying to serve you, the consumer of this web site, with a complete and objective set of reviews.

This behavior hasn't endeared me to some of the swimbait makers out there who (rightfully) feel a very strong connection to their creations and get really upset when they are copied. I do understand the blood, sweat, and tears that go in to making a bait. I've tried on many occasions to make my own baits and I appreciate the difficulty. But what I don't do is get involved in the 'who copied who' fights. I'm just a fisherman, I'm not the patent office.

As far as this thread goes, if you guys want to have a reasonable conversation about this type of stuff, I can hang with that. I may sit here cringing when I see some of these posts because I've seen where posts like that have gone in the past. But as long as these posts don't degenerate in to name calling and calling each other out, they'll stay. I'm an optimist by nature and I'm going to hope that no posts have to be deleted in this thread. I happen to think that the people who visit and post on calfishing.com are a higher quality group when it comes to fishing, intelligence, and reasonable behavior. Please prove me right.

-Rob
