This week's installment of what's cheap, new, or vaguely interesting :) I don't know anything about the 11" trout on eBay, but that one caught my eye. The dozen Whams for $0.50 is a nice deal if you like inshore saltwater bass fishing.

Rob,

The 11" trout is a new swimbait by a muskie fishermen out of Illinois. I haven't seen the trout in the water, but I have a shad swimbait by Nate and they are pretty unique baits. They are made out of a tough material that is almost like a solid hard foam that seems to be almost indestructable, which is good if you are a muskie fisherman like me. I think they would be good for Bass too though. They are a sinking bait and are pretty heavy, so some stout tackle is necessary, although I thought Nate said on a muskie forum that he was in the process of making different sink rates in the future. Not sure what the weight is on the trout, someone may want to request that information from him. But I will say that if it swims like the shad, then I am sure that it will be a great swimbait though. Here is a link to Nates website.

The giant suzy sucker is a good swimbait on there too, I'm surprised I haven't heard of any california bass fishermen using these on the site. At least the smaller versions, anyway. The one listed is a pretty hefty swimbait and maybe a bit big for bass, but they do make a 9" and 11" version that is a little bit easier to lob. They work well for muskie at least, but I haven't caught a bass on one yet.

Speaking of muskie baits, I've seen a lot of talk about the lunker phunker and have wondered why people are paying such high amounts for a large topwater walk the dog bait when there are so many walk the dog baits made for muskies that don't cost an arm and a leg. I've caught nice bass on muskie mania docs, poes, and especially weagles. Weagles are heavy topwater walk the dog baits that sit low in the water, and that do a number on bass. I've caught a few bass on them while in the process of trying to catch muskies and know a lot of other guys who have also. Just thought I would share the information. You can get most of these baits on muskie lure sites like Rollie and Helens or Thorne brothers baits.

Here is a pic of an Indiana bass around 3 pounds caught on a weagle while muskie fishing.

Thanks for the post Todd. I always look at musky baits with no real concept of which ones are good or bad, so it helps to get pointed in the right direction :)

If anyone from the site buys that 11" bait, I'd love to hear some feedback on it.

Glad to be of some help Rob, I know how hard it is to know what's what when you enter into unfamiliar territory. Believe me, there are just as many musky baits out there that are pretty much junk as there seem to be bass swimbaits on the market. Luckily for me, your tackle reviews helped me figure out which baits I should try out. So far, the huddleston has all the rest beat though, at least as far as muskies are concerned. Funny thing though, I haven't caught a bass on one yet, lol. Of course, the way I use it to catch muskies isn't quite what you guys probably do to catch bass. I use a 16 ROF, but rarely count it down at all. I fish it super fast on a high speed reel. I start burning it in and rip it from time to time, which is the only time you will ever see a hudd turn on its side. This is what makes the muskies go wild. And the figure eights I can make with a hudd are great to catch hot muskies on the follow. Love those baits.

Sorry to spill the beans on muskie lures, ICSpots, but I just think I owe it to you guys because your innovations in bass fishing have translated well for muskie fishing for me, and also, because I know several muskie lures out there are consistently catching bass.
Now it seems to be catching on in the muskie world finally (or unfortunately perhaps, lol), with a lot of new swimbaits showing up at the muskie shows this winter. Maybe some of these new lures will drive prices down across the board for everyone.

I may start a thread on one of the muskie boards to find out what muskie baits are consistently catching bass out there and get you some of the results. For me personally I have found that the topwaters I mentioned catch some nice bass. But my most consistent producers of bass are large muskie spinnerbaits, certain bucktails, and SS shads. The most consistent bucktail that I can't keep bass off of are the Mepps Marabou's, which I burn in shallow waters near the surface. The spinnerbait of choice would be a black rad dog with a single blade. And ss shads are the bomb for bass. 6" shallow balsa crankbaits that move a ton of water when you rip them always seem to attract bass, both big and small. Definitely one to try.

I'll let you know what I find out from other muskie hunters.

Todd -

I'm glad you posted the comments about the musky lures. After looking through Rollie & Helen's Musky Shop catalog each year, I'm surprised that there haven't been more posts about the use of pike/musky lures for largemouth and stripers. Both the Musky Shop and Thorne Brothers websites are great places to look for new ideas.

The smaller Suzy Sucker could work as a catfish/bullhead imitator especially in off-colored water.

I've seen various posts about "pro-rigging" swimbaits. On some baits this appears to have been done to eliminate the chance that the bass can use the weight of the bait as leverage to throw the hooks. A totally different approach for a floating hardbait would be the breakaway mechanism used on the Roberts Mudpuppy (http://www.mudpuppylures.com/index2.html). The breakaway mechanism allows the fish to pull the hook harness free from the bait and then your retrieve the floating bait after landing the fish.

Here are some other ideas of pike/musky lures that could work for bass and stripers. I started with a bass lure and then identified similar pike/musky versions. Take a look at Rollie & Helen's or Thorne Brothers and you will see many other possibilities.

- Crazy Crawler >>> Hi-Fin Creeper, LeLure Creeper

- Spook >>> Bucher Dancin' Raider (looks like a cross between a Super Spook and a Spit'n Image), Big Fork Top Cat.

- Prop Bait >>> Bucher TopRaider, Crazy Crank Rumbler, LeLure Globe, Suick Cisco Kid Topper

- Buzzbait >>> TNT Triclops

- In-line Spinner >>> Pick a bucktail, any bucktail

- Jerk Bait >>> Bagley B-Flat, Cobb Crazy Shad, Odyssey Pig/Piglet

- Jigging Spoon/Tail-Spin >>> Bondy Bait, Salmo Giant Chubby Darter

Keep posting the new ideas as it is always nice to hear a different perspective.

Tim
