I just moved up ftom LA and i really want to learn the basics of sturgeon fishing. What setups you use and amount of weight for these rivers. I have my own boat. Id love to go out once with a die hard sturgeon fisherman to get some pointers and see how its done

First off, welcome to NorCal! If you want to learn about Sturgeon, I'd go talk to Kevin Yost at Gun's Fishing and Other Stuff in Vacaville. I'm unsure if he still guides, but he's the man you want to talk to about Sturgeon fishing.

You will be putting in some long hours as they arent too easy to catch, fishing is alot better from a boat and youll have a much better chance of landing them. Some of the better areas are pittsburg or rio vista. You could try sherman island levee off the bank should be pretty preductive right now. For rods from the bank

9-12' surf rods are best 20-30 mono

boat rod 7' same 20-30lb class

The main rig is a slider with weight from 4-12oz a short main line using briad 80-100lb or 60lb mono I usually use 2 6/0 octupus hooks on my rigs

Baits are eel various shrimp sardines and pileworms

Just stop by romeos bait or freeport bait and they will give you plenty of info and locations where there being caught.

Good Luck

Hey let that Bass go I wanna catch her some day
