#6275, "FOCL STRIPER DERBY Castaic Lake!!!!!!!!"

Well it appears that it will be a go! I spoke with Dewayne Maxwell with the DFG today and he stated he would be sending the permit tomorrow!
Last night at the Friends of Castaic Lake meeting we were allocated enough money to have a Cash payout for the top 3 fish! The pay out is as follows $300 for 1st, $200 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd places. I have spoke with some Tackle stores and vendors and I have some very nice product that has "tenatively" been promised for the event. I hope to have enough product to pay down past 3rd place.
The Derby will offically start November 1st, and will last till December 15th at which time we will have a cerimony to present the prizes to the winners.
The derby is free to enter all you have to do to enter is when you catch your striper take it to the main launch ramp have it weighed in, fillout the form thats it!Easy. More will be posted later. Please tell everyone you know who fishes for stripers about this event! If you have any questions or comments email me at castaicdave@sbcglobal.net
God bless
Dave

Thanks for all the effort Dave. I'll do my best to post one for the derby. Speaking of which...has there been any reports of fish on the trout plugs lately??? I was out fishing the west ramp the other day but didn't fare so well. Any pointers? Thanks a million!

some guy stuck a27lber on the last plant, banged it out on a ac skinny, this derby is going to be interesting with all the bait being dumped into yhe lake,i wouldent be surprised if the winning weight is over 30lbs.im going to have to put some time in up there,i know they are going to be going off big time within the next few plants .good luck fellas, and let the bodies hit the floor!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woodchucker.....
I know the guy that got the 26 pound striper. He wasn't using
an "ac skinny" He's throwing a bait called a "Skinny Trout"
The only place that has them is Bob Sands. Just thought that I'd
clear up the misunderstanding.

Now if only I could catch a striper out of there. Everytime I chuck the big stuff I get largemouth, now only if I can time those trout plants. Any tips for me Dave ? How about your custom spinnerbaits ?

Castaic Dave..............
I thought that the derby was going to be based upon total weight
turned in by each person. Is it now just the biggest fish?

the payout is still going to be for big fish. Cash payout for 1st 2nd & 3rd places $300, $200, $100 respectivly that is for big fish only.

The Total weight prize will be ... well I'll just say a really nice prize! We will also have a drawing for another "really nice prize" the drawing will consist of all entrants weigh in slip! Therefore allowing everyone reguardless of how often one fishes a chance to win something!

This is the first year we are doing this so if this goes over well then next year things will be better! With bigger and better prizes!

God bless
Dave

Thanks for the info. I'm really glad to see someone trying to
do something fun with the striper fishery.

I don't think that it will put a dent in the population but every striper that we get out will help the largies....hopefully.

The stripers have really over run the lake.

#6293, "Striper Night Tournament???"
In response to Reply # 16

I've been thinking...If there really is cause for concern about the striper population in Castaic...why not hold a night tournament just for stripers. No catch and release...just catch and kill.

I know some of you may have a problem with that statement but I for one remember the days when ten pound largemouth were pretty common in the weekly fish reports. That was back in the early 90's when everyone thought the next world record would come from that lake!

Well..hows this for a tournament format...

Fishing from 12am to 6am from boat or shore. Largest stringer wins. All proceeds go toward a largemouth revitalization program??? From what I understand, there is a 10 fish limit for stripers at Castaic? I would think throwing the big wood for those bad boys at night would be pretty productive!

I don't know...maybe it's just wishful thinking but I sure would like a chance to fish those stripers at night! I'd love to hear what you guys think???

The big stripes like the wood, espesialy at night. But as we all know fishing at night at alot of the socal lakes is illegal. So thats all i will say about that stuff.
As far as the upper lake goes, there are still alot of fat bass in there, but about bringing it back to what it was is just wishfull thinking, sorry to say but that there is now a striper lake.Lets just pray to the fish gods that those suckers dont get into the lagoon. No matter haw hard you fish that lake,it will never put a dent in the striper population, once they are there its all over with. Its like there some kind of cancer! But hey the bigger they get and the harder they pull, the better.Thats why i chase those big suckas all over the place.later bros!

I hate to say it but a friend of mine who is a deckhand down south was over at the Castaic Lagoon a few months ago and he saw some breaking fish, so they threw out with senkos and his buddy got one. It was a 4lb striper! They probably won't reproduce much in the lagoon, but it would seem that they are in there.

I love to fish the stripes but transplanting fish sucks. Between Skinner, Silverwood, Castaic, and Pryamid we have some great stripe fisheries. I would hate to see the stripes in Perris. I hear there is a plan to introduce them to Elsinore.

Hey Woodchucker(or any others reading this), I live about 15 minutes from Perris, and am there all the time. If you see an adult and a tall kid that looks about 13 in a fairly new red and white Glastron runabout, please introduce yourself. I'd sure like to meet some people from this board in person.

(I bought the runabout before I knew that I was a fisherman. I wet one line cause it was too cold to ski, and caught a DFG pan special. That's all we've used it for since! Anybody want to trade thier rig???:))

Good job on the striper derby, sounds like fun!

Don't give up on the lower lake yet!!
I caught an 8 lb. striper 12 years ago near the launch ramp on a jitterbug. For some reason they don't seem to thrive in small bodies of water. They have been in Wild Horse for 20 years but never big numbers.

Here is a link to the current standings in the Striper derby. As you will see low turnout so far. Only 6 weigh slips turned in. Big fish is only just over 12. Come on guys I know you can do better than that!

Good Luck
Dave
