#10469, "Dumbest big bite you ever got"

Was thinking today... what was the biggest bite I ever had that I deserved the least?

The one that sticks in my mind most was at San Pablo about 5 years ago. I was fishing 9" Stocker Trout and made a terrible cast. My thumb slipped off the reel, the lure went almost straight up in the air, and landed in 3 feet of water, about 50 feet from where it was supposed to land.

I decided to fish the cast, mostly out of laziness. Took a about 2 cranks and watched a 9lber come out of no where on a bare nothing bank and eat the lure. There should not have been a bass there, let alone a 9lb bass. It was a sandy, shallow, nothing shoreline.

Your stories? :)

Im fishing Castaic Lagoon for the first time and throwing a Hudd. Finally get that little tick and rear back. Rod loads but Im thinking WTF. I reel in a western grebe fouled hooked in the belly. The bird bit and thats my story.

I was in my boat but my buddy was running the front since he knew the water. I was also using his rod because mine were having technical difficulties. I make a long cast over a long point and it lands in about one foot of water. As I was casting I asked him if he thought that spot was a good spot. Before he could answer and about 10 cranks into the retrieve I get popped and bring in a 12-10. Theres a little more to the story (Ill let him tell that part), but I still think my buddy is pissed at me about that one.

This last spring me and my buddy are working our way around a big main lake point with tons of trees under the water. He throws a 3:16 Wake Bait way out behind the boat and drags it along as I work my way across the point. We are both watching my bait that I had thrown out in front of the boat, I had a blow up but the fish missed and was sitting under it. We hear a HUGE splash behind us and think a MONSTER bass has taken his wake bait. Instead, when we turn around we see that a Bald Eagle has just nailed his bait. He hits free spool real fast and starts yelling "what do I do!" Luckily the Eagle drops his bait just as he was about to run out of line. I have no idea how he didn't get a hook in him.

Another time I was throwing swimbaits in the river for big stripers. It was getting pretty dark and I was about to pack it in when I get a massive hit. My line just starts screaming off my real and I have my drag cranked down! All of a sudden I hear something thrashing on top of the water and hissing? (pretty dark, hard to see) I'm really not sure at this point what I'm hearring, or what I have. My partner shines a light out in the river to see that there is an otter on the end of my line. I try to bring him in as close as possible before cutting the line. The last I saw of him he was running up the bank with my swimbait stuck in his face. Man I really felt bad about that one! I hope he survived that ordeal.

Hey! Was this subject supposed to be dumbest big bite you ever got from a FISH? Oh well, I have had plenty of those too.

I was in my Kayak trolling a homemade wood bait at Casitas and right at the very end of the day my partner in his yak was way ahead of me. I wanted to catch up to him quick so I dropped the hammer on the trolling motor (yes I had a trolling motor attached to the yak :P ) and a few seconds into my full throttle-ness my rod doubled over but quickly bounced back. I thought I had snagged something so I stopped and retrieved in my lure. Well it was very obvious I got a bite, my lure was demolished and had huge bite marks dragging down the side of the bait deep into the epoxy.

That is still my only bite at Casitas on the big baits and it haunts me to this day, it was probably a 23lb bass :)

The dumbest big bite I ever got has to be my PB and first Swimbait fish I ever caught. It was on my second ever cast and I was more or less just making sure I had the cast control on the filping rod I was using to throw the Castaic SBT trout was set correctly. I just chucked the bait out there and reeled it back, as it came by a submerged tree I got nailed by a 9.75 pound bass. I feel I didn't deserve that fish as I did not put in the time, and countless fish-less hours that is supposed to come with swimbait fishing. I guess the fish gods agree with me as I have never had a fish close to that size since and that fish was caught in March 2002.

Lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what have-yous

Probably the dumbest big bite I got happend 6-7 years ago. I was fishing out of the back of a friends boat and as we were cruising down the shoreline we went right over a big fish that immediately kicked off into deep water. It was late May at the time, so it may have been on a bed, though we didn't see one.

We kept on moving down the bank, but I picked up a brush hog and made a long cast behind the boat where I thought the fish was, hand-pulling line off my reel as my bait sunk and the boat was moving away.

Soon as I tightened up my line the fish was on... 13.7lbs.

It's much easier to think of big bites I deserved to get, but didn't deserve to land. Like the time I broke my rod in half setting the hook on a 10lber with 100 feet of line out. Or the time I hooked a 10lber in the back of the throat. My stinger rig broke, the bait flew out of the fish's mouth, and the 2nd treble hook snagged it on the outside of its head. Or even just a couple months ago when I had a 10lber swim through a hole in my landing net while fighting it on spinning gear.

Don't even get me started on the birds. I've never caught two bass on one cast with a swimbait, but I have snared a double-header of canadian geese, for a while anyway :)

Well, It's nice to know I am not the only Otter catcher. LOL!
I had not had a hit all day it was dark now and one hit came I set VERY hard. Splashing and thrashing I thought " WHAT IS THIS??" I went all over the lake following that thing. It had a 150.oo bait it it's face. After 1 hour I lost track of it.:(

A few years ago the fishing at lake Barrett was soo stupid 100 fish days were easy. I read a report from a biologist that said the fish had prasites thet made them think they were always hungry. I rember catching a fish and letting it go and watching it swim away and casting in front of it and cacthing it again. I did it twice with 2 different fish and then I felt bad for them and didnt do it anymore even though I could have. They werent big though, around 3lbs.
I have caught a couple decent fish that Mark calles "line jumpers"
You cast out, the bait hits the water but your line never stops going out. It always takes me a second to figure out what just happened. Those fish must actualy see the bait before it hits the water or I must have litteraly landed it right on top of them.
This seems to bunk the theory that the loud splash of a swimbait spooks the fish.

Not exactly a big bite.. but a couple stupid bites! Was fishing with a boater in a small club tourney at the local lake last year, It was windy, and we were hitting an area in open water I know well. I threw a Beaver out, let it sink, and was fishing when my partner hooks up. I net the fish, and somehow in the process manage to scatter my gear acoss the rear deck. My rod was on the passenger seat with the Beaver out, andI'm sitting there scrambling to get all my #### back together. Pick up the rod after 5 minutes, start to reel in for another cast, and fish on! Had one recently where the fish ate a dropshot while I was helping my dad untangle his rig. I'm sitting there and just finished put everything back in order when my rod goes sideways down the gunnel. Ended up being a solid 3lber. Don't get me started on birds. Seems every trip out I almost hook or nail a bird on the water with a cast. My worst ever was when I was fishing a Vixen last year and ended having a great blue heron take in in the leg. He didn't even hit the lure! I made a cast across this long point and as the line settling on the water, this bird just comes out of the trees right across the line. The bird takes line like crazy and I'm holding onto the rod with one hand try to find my pliers (which I had left on the bottom of the boat in an Einstein moment..) I watched the friggin Vixen fly out of the water into the bird's leg right as I run out of line and it snaps off the knot. Long story short(er)... my friends who was on the lake that day had to join me while we netted and proceeded to do removal surgery on a really pissed off heron.

Bass + Fisherman= BAASS ADDICTT!!!

I was fishing clear lake on a windy, rainy spring day. I was trying to cast a shallow running bomber minnow (on a real light crankin stick & 10 lb. test) to a tule/boulder transition. The wind blew my lure WAY off course in about 30' of water. Well I am reelin back in as fast as I can to recast and my rod doubles over. I am thinking how in the heck did I snag here when my rod starts surging. A few minutes we have a 10-6 in the boat. My buddy had said he always stuck a nice fish off this deep point and he was right. I really didnt deserve that one though.

Throwing the original 8" Optimum from the shore of the Lagoon in 96. Had a big one come up and almost beach itself trying to eat the bait. I looked to my buddy and said man... that was about an 8 pounder (not seeing the size in the low light and through all of the commotion). I made a little flick cast about 10 feet out and the fish ate the bait at my feet in about 10 inches of water.... all 15 pounds of her. Dumb.

Haven't fished a traditional bass lure for more than a total of 5 hours since that day.

the dumbest big bite i ever got.....it was night time and we were fishing a dock. i was casting along the pylons with a crankbait. we had not even got a bite after hours of fishing. i was tired and super bored. when i get bored while fishing i start to goof around. so i cast out along the pylons, as long a cast as i could make and decided it was a good idea to reel in the crank as fast as i possibly can. wouldn't you know it, a fish slams my crank, nothing short of 11 pounds! then, i do it again and land a 6 pounder! my brother and his friend were astonished and i was super excited.:D

I guess mine was just this April, I was tying my used boat I purchased from Mossdale, I was with a friend (newbee) its his first ever fishing trip, we couldn't even get a bite, anyway, as usual he has birdnest from trying my casting reel throwing my BBZ SS, I looked at the mess start pulling line from the reel, dropping it on the water, the next thing I yelled (frustration got me) at him saying don't pull the line!!! he said, dude I'm not even touching it, I looked the line trying to figure out, whats going on pull and splash guess that sums it all, no reel I was using my bare hand pulling the line, manage to land it (5.6), screaming yeah but we all know not a deserving catch, after I reeled it in, my friend thought we are taking the fish home, as soon as I kissed and weigh it, drop it back in the water, my friend goes WHATTTT THE XXXX we been fishing for hours and you let go our catch, thought I share he never stop up until we get home telling his GF the story, LOL :+

I went way back in a little creek channel. On my way in a spooked 3 or 4 spotted bass between 2 and 3lbs. It couldn't have been more than 3ft deep and 10ft wide and water and it was pretty fast moving up in the creek. I saw some movement under some scum that the boat was right on top of, so i flipped my swimbait about 8ft and see a wake come strait to it. I figured it was one of the spots. I was wrong. Turned out to be an 8.4 largie. whaaat?

No, I casted my swimbait in some scum, and had a huge wake, but I got too scummed up...To which Mountainbass casted his swimbait on top of the wake and almost instantly hooked a 8.4 lb bass in about 2 inches of water lol. That was the dumbest bite ive seen.

Well, apparently you know more about the fish than they do huh? Thats like shooting a rifle at 200 yards, missing the bullseye and saying that the sight must be off :P

It was my fish. I got her excited. You got the glory. And on top of it I was high on throat medicine because I was so sick, and lost a double digit minutes later on a perfect cast down a beautiful spot. Insult to injury.

The dumbest bite I ever got from a fish over 10 lbs was just an awful cast with a swimbait. I knew it was a bad cast, so I started pulling the bait with my rod quickly and reeling it fast. The boat was going the other way so the bait was being really pulled quickly. A 10 1/2 lber, came like a rocket out of nowhere and inhaled THROUGH the bait, her momentum took her 5 feet past where my bait had previously been swimming. It was just an aggressive bite, on a bad cast.

Cool thread.

This Spring, I was working very hard to get a big fish. The weather was cold and I wasn't exactly killing them. I was working all weekend for 1-2 bites, and had no big fish bites whatsoever. In the afternoon on a Sunday, an hour or two before I planned to take off, I throw out and across a big long point with submerged wood. First, I hang up my ROF 12 on a tree, oops number 1. Second, I pick up a ROF 5 and ss my Hudd is in flight, I can see the tail foul on the belly traps...So as soon as my bait hits the water, I rip--rip---rip the bait to unfoul the tail from the trap hooks----boom--fish comes out of the water to inhale the bait. Vicious strike, 10-2 pound fish.

I feel like I didn't deserve the fish because I fouled an ROF 12 the cast before and my cast with the ROF 5 was a fouled cast. Two strikes and still got the fish.

One of my first sb reels was a 7:1 burner I used as double duty for topwater. While burnin' a hudd in for a re-cast I was watching some fish busting the opposite direction. While I watched the fish bust I started to get into position so I could cast to them, and before I knew it mayhem broke loose! I swear It was like JAWS wanted a bite of my boat or somethin'. I fell back and set the hook, had the fish on for a few white water head shakes, and she came unbuttoned. She was probably 10-12lbs and that was the first time I'd seen how fast and furious one of them big girls could be. Felt like I needed a qualude after that encounter.

The most memorable would be a 10-11 I caught on a crankbait at night. I barely gave this fish the time of day because I thought it was smaller than what it was (hey it was dark). I hooked it in maybe 3 feet of water outside of a dock. The fish rolled on the surface and I guessed 4-5 pounds. I played the fish actually trying to loose it so I didn't have to fumble with lippping it at night with trebles stuck in the mouth. I get it boat side and turn my head lamp on to see the giant mouth coming my way. I said to my buddy "Holy $**T thats a 10 pounder!" He lipped her for me and all was good :)

Fishing a ledge that has always been productive and has a
sandy adjacent point if you can even call it that. I've never caught sh1t off of it.

set up on the ledge for nada, then all hell breaks loose
on the point, to bad it was carp spawning and going nuts. probably
around 8 of them foaming up the water. So i figure what the
hell and throw across the point. (not one bite all day)

about 1/2 way into the retrieve i get absolutely
crushed, fought like a champ but only turned out to
be 8 1/2 lbs hooks fell out in the net, camera batteries
dead.

Not bad considering the big motors battery was dead before
we launched. Had to keep swappin one battery back and forth.

apparently it was a bad day for batteries :-(

I was fishing Shasta out of a rental boat (no trolling motor) on a July 4th houseboat trip, Sacramento arm. It was approximately 8 AM and I was fishing a Silver Buddy in 5 - 30 ft. of water along a steep cliff with a shade line. The boat had drifted up against the shoreline and I was casting parallel. When the Silver Buddy hit 30 feet I burned it back to the boat; as I was about to take it out of the water a HUGE (for Shasta) bass hammered the bait with its back out of the water!!! It looked like it was shot out of a cannon. It peeled some drag and was landed in a few minutes. The fish was a skinny 4 - 5lber that could've been 8 lbs in the Spring. It looked like a frickin' GIANT compared to all the fish we caught that week. Afterwards I quickly motored back to the houseboat and made my wife take a picture of me w/ fish for some proof... she was less than pleased.

It was stupid because the boat was touching the bank in the clear water, there was no shade in that particular spot, the fish hit about 2 feet from the boat, and I'd already fished that area.
